Remote | Ad hoc / flexible workload | Immediate work available
Hazel House is an established, Xero-only accountancy and bookkeeping practice looking for an experienced self-employed accountant/subcontractor to provide additional capacity on an ad hoc basis.
We have immediate work ready to allocate, including:
- Set-up of a new limited company and its related group/holding company structure
- Preparation of 3 sets of year-end company accounts
Further work is expected to follow as required.
This role would suit an experienced accountant who already works independently, has their own practice or freelance clients, or would like to take on additional accountancy work alongside their existing commitments.
This is not currently an employed position and there are no guaranteed minimum hours. Work will be offered on an assignment-by-assignment basis, and you will be free to accept or decline work depending on your availability.
There is, however, genuine potential for the right person to move into a permanent in-house accountant position on salary in the future, should both parties wish to do so. There is absolutely no requirement or expectation to make that transition — we simply want applicants to know that there is scope to grow with Hazel House if that appeals to them.
The work
The successful subcontractor must be confident working independently and have proven experience in:
- Preparation of year-end accounts
- Preparation of quarterly management accounts
- Accounts for group structures and holding companies
- Corporation tax-related accountancy work
- Company secretarial work
- Incorporating/registering new companies
- Companies House filings and associated administration
- Reviewing accounting records and identifying adjustments required
- Working directly from client records held within Xero
Experience providing tax planning or tax strategy advice would be highly beneficial. We are happy to agree a higher rate for work requiring this additional level of expertise where it provides additional value to our clients.
Xero experience is essential
Hazel House is a Xero-only practice, so applicants must already be fully experienced and confident using Xero.
This is not a position where we can provide basic Xero training. You should be comfortable navigating client organisations, reviewing bookkeeping, preparing accounts information, identifying errors and using Xero efficiently as part of your normal working process.
Professional requirements
You must:
- Be appropriately qualified and/or have substantial relevant accountancy practice experience
- Have demonstrable experience preparing year-end accounts
- Have your own professional indemnity insurance
- Operate on a genuinely self-employed/subcontract basis
- Be responsible for your own tax and National Insurance obligations
- Maintain appropriate confidentiality and data protection standards
- Be comfortable working with sensitive client financial information
- Be reliable and able to meet agreed filing and completion deadlines
Hazel House is licensed and supervised through the IAB.
AML checks on Hazel House clients are undertaken internally by Hazel House, so you will not ordinarily be required to undertake our client onboarding AML checks. However, you are welcome to complete any additional AML procedures required by your own professional body, regulatory obligations or internal procedures.
How work will be allocated
This is currently an ad hoc subcontracting arrangement designed to provide additional capacity when our internal workload requires it.
There is no obligation on Hazel House to provide a minimum volume of work and no obligation on the subcontractor to accept every assignment offered.
Where possible, work will be agreed on a fixed-fee basis, for example:
Year-end accounts – from £300 per set
Additional work outside an agreed scope may be paid at an agreed hourly rate depending on the nature and complexity of the work.
Higher rates can be agreed for more specialist work, particularly where the subcontractor can provide additional expertise in areas such as tax strategy, complex company structures or advisory work.
Fees will always be agreed before work is undertaken.
What we're looking for
We're looking for somebody who can effectively pick up a file and get on with it.
You should be comfortable working independently, asking sensible questions where information is genuinely missing, and producing work to a standard that can be reviewed and completed efficiently.
We're particularly interested in hearing from accountants who enjoy working with owner-managed businesses and who can look beyond simply producing a set of accounts to identify opportunities, risks or useful advice for the client.
