About the role
Balfour Beatty UKCS Living Places is looking for a Street Lighting Night Scout to join our team in East Sussex.
This role will support the Street Lighting department on an existing highways maintenance contract, helping to ensure illuminated street furniture across the county is inspected, recorded and reported accurately. Working predominantly at night and often independently, you will play an important role in identifying maintenance defects and ensuring faults are raised promptly for the maintenance team to attend.
Based from the Ringmer Depot, you will follow a planned night scouting schedule covering the county over a four-week cycle, using a tablet to record and report defects directly into the appropriate system.
What you'll be doing
As a Street Lighting Night Scout, your responsibilities will include:
- Inspecting illuminated street furniture and identifying maintenance defects
- Reporting faults such as unlit units, dirty sign plates and bollards, missing units, obscured lighting caused by tree canopies, twisted sign plates and columns out of alignment
- Working alone at night while following agreed schedules and safe working practices
- Recording and submitting defects accurately using a tablet and recognised reporting systems
- Raising faults for maintenance crews to attend
- Supporting the wider Street Lighting team to ensure works are completed safely and on time
- Reporting hazards, defects, accidents, incidents and near misses in line with company procedures
- Following health, safety, quality and compliance requirements at all times
- Liaising with internal teams, operational staff, line management and subcontractors where required
- Helping to ensure plant, equipment and systems are inspected and any defects are reported appropriately
Who we're looking for
We are looking for someone who is reliable, safety-focused and comfortable working independently during night-time hours.
The successful candidate will have:
- A valid driving licence
- Confidence using tablets and electronic equipment
- Strong attention to detail when identifying and recording defects
- Good time management skills and the ability to follow a planned schedule
- Sound judgement and decision-making skills
- A proactive approach to health, safety and quality
- Good communication skills
- The ability to work well with others and engage professionally with operational teams
- A customer-focused approach
- Active listening skills and a willingness to follow company procedures
