Are you a detail-oriented and organised individual looking to build a career within a busy and highly respected pathology service? We have an exciting opportunity for a Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our Pathology Department and play a vital role in supporting the delivery of high-quality diagnostic services.
As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for the accurate processing and preparation of patient samples, ensuring requests are handled efficiently and supporting Biomedical Scientists in delivering exceptional patient care.
Working within our Sample Reception team, you will be responsible for receiving, processing, and preparing a wide range of specimens from wards, outpatient departments, GP practices, and external healthcare providers. You will ensure samples are correctly logged, prepared for testing, and referred to external laboratories where required.
You will also act as a key point of contact for clinicians, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals, responding to telephone enquiries and supporting the smooth operation of the laboratory service.
- Receiving, sorting, and processing patient specimens accurately and efficiently.
- Preparing samples for analysis, including labelling and centrifugation.
- Entering patient and test request information onto laboratory systems.
- Identifying and investigating specimen discrepancies in line with departmental procedures.
- Managing the dispatch of samples to specialist reference laboratories.
- Maintaining accurate documentation and laboratory records.
- Responding professionally to telephone enquiries from clinical staff.
- Supporting quality audits and laboratory compliance activities.
- Monitoring and recording equipment temperatures and reporting issues promptly.
- Undertaking routine cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
- Assisting with administrative duties and supporting wider pathology operations.

Previous experience in a healthcare, laboratory, or administrative environment would be advantageous but is not essential.

37.5 hours per week, including participation in a Saturday morning rota (approximately 1 in 4 Saturdays).
