Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced, organised and passionate teacher to join Quill Academy.
The successful candidate will teach engaging small-group 11+ sessions for Year 4 & 5 pupils while taking ownership of the planning, sequencing and continued development of our curriculum. This is an opportunity for an ambitious teacher to take on a role that goes beyond lesson delivery and directly shape the quality and direction of an established 11+ programme.
Quill Academy is a Halifax-based tuition provider offering high-quality, small-group 11+ preparation, built on years of teaching and tutoring experience. We are looking for someone who combines warmth and confidence in the classroom with strong subject knowledge, excellent organisation and consistently high academic standards.
Duties
- Plan and deliver engaging small-group 11+ lessons for Year 4 & 5 pupils across English, mathematics and Creative Writing.
- Take ownership of the Year 4 & 5 curriculum, ensuring content is appropriately sequenced, challenging and aligned with the requirements of local grammar school entrance examinations.
- Review, develop and improve curriculum plans, lesson materials, assessments and teaching resources over time.
- Manage and organise the Year 4 & 5 resource library, ensuring materials remain accurate, relevant, accessible and up to date.
- Monitor pupil attainment and progress through classwork, homework and assessments.
- Use assessment information to identify gaps in knowledge and adapt teaching to meet individual and group learning needs.
- Maintain consistent teaching and curriculum standards across the Year 5 programme.
- Support other teachers and tutors with curriculum delivery, lesson expectations and the effective use of teaching resources.
- Provide constructive academic feedback and contribute to pupil progress updates where required.
- Create an inclusive, focused and encouraging classroom environment that builds pupils’ confidence and independence.
- Communicate professionally with colleagues, parents and the wider Quill Academy team.
- Uphold Quill Academy’s safeguarding procedures, professional standards and expectations for pupil welfare.
- Maintain accurate curriculum, assessment and pupil-progress documentation.
Skills and Experience
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is required.
- Strong experience teaching primary-aged pupils, ideally within Key Stage 2 or Year 5.
- Previous experience delivering 11+ preparation is highly desirable.
- Applications are also welcomed from teachers with strong English or mathematics subject knowledge and the ability and commitment to develop detailed knowledge of the 11+ curriculum.
- Previous experience as a subject leader, phase leader, curriculum lead or similar is preferred.
- Excellent subject knowledge in primary English and mathematics.
- Strong curriculum-planning skills, including the ability to sequence learning effectively and identify progression across a programme.
- Genuine organisational ability, with experience managing teaching materials, resources and assessment content.
- High standards of written English and strong proofreading skills.
- Confidence using assessment information to monitor progress and adapt teaching.
- A warm, encouraging and authoritative classroom presence.
- Excellent communication skills when working with pupils, parents, teachers and operational staff.
- A commitment to high expectations, inclusive teaching and positive pupil outcomes.
- An enhanced DBS certificate registered with the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one.
- A clear understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and a commitment to promoting the welfare of children.
Role Details
- Part-time and term-time.
- Based in Halifax and the wider Calderdale area.
- Teaching will primarily take place during weekend sessions.
- Hours will depend on the agreed teaching and curriculum-lead responsibilities.
- This is a paid position, with remuneration discussed according to experience and the scope of the role.
