Fleet Manager
Overview
The Fleet Manager is responsible for the effective management, safety, compliance, and operational performance of the company's Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) fleet operating within the aggregates, asphalt, and quarry mineral products sector and other sector. The role ensures that all transport operations are delivered safely, efficiently, legally, and cost-effectively while supporting excellent customer service and maintaining high operational standards across the logistics network.
Key Responsibilities
Fleet Operations Management
- Manage the day-to-day operation of the LGV fleet, ensuring vehicles and drivers are allocated efficiently to meet customer requirements and operational demands.
- Maximise fleet utilisation while maintaining high standards of safety, service, and compliance.
- Coordinate fleet availability to support production and delivery schedules.
Vehicle Procurement and Maintenance
- Oversee the procurement, leasing, replacement, and disposal of fleet vehicles in line with business requirements and budgets.
- Develop and implement preventative maintenance programmes to minimise vehicle downtime.
- Ensure all vehicles receive scheduled servicing, inspections, MOT testing, and repairs in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and legal requirements.
Compliance and Safety
- Ensure full compliance with all relevant UK transport legislation, including:
- DVSA regulations
- Operator Licence (O-Licence) requirements
- Driver Hours Regulations
- Working Time Directive
- Road Traffic legislation
- Maintain accurate records of vehicle inspections, maintenance, tachograph data, and defect reporting.
- Promote a proactive safety culture by ensuring company health and safety policies are consistently implemented across all transport operations.
Driver Management
- Lead, motivate, and support LGV drivers to achieve high standards of safety, compliance, and customer service.
- Conduct performance reviews, coaching, and training where required.
- Manage recruitment support, absence management, return-to-work interviews, and disciplinary procedures in accordance with company policy.
- Ensure sufficient driver availability to maintain uninterrupted operational performance.
Transport Planning and Dispatch
- Work closely with transport planners and dispatch teams to optimise routing, vehicle utilisation, and load efficiency.
- Respond effectively to operational changes, customer requirements, and unexpected disruptions.
- Resolve transport issues promptly while maintaining agreed service levels.
Cost Control and Fleet Performance
- Monitor and control fleet operating costs, including:
- Fuel consumption
- Vehicle maintenance
- Tyres
- Repairs
- External contractor costs
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs without compromising safety or service quality.
Data Analysis and Reporting
- Utilise fleet management software, telematics, and transport management systems to monitor fleet performance.
- Analyse key performance indicators (KPIs), including:
- Vehicle utilisation
- Fleet downtime
- Driver performance
- Fuel efficiency
- Compliance metrics
- Produce regular management reports and recommend improvements to increase productivity and operational efficiency.
Continuous Improvement
- Drive initiatives that improve fleet efficiency, environmental performance, compliance, safety, and customer satisfaction.
- Work collaboratively with internal departments and external suppliers to implement best practices and continuous improvement programmes.
Skills, Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- Proven management or supervisory experience within transport, logistics, fleet operations, construction, aggregates, quarrying, or a related industry. Direct LGV fleet management experience is desirable; however, full training will be provided for suitable candidates.
- Strong understanding of UK transport legislation, Operator Licence compliance, and DVSA standards.
- Excellent leadership, communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in fleet management systems, telematics, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to prioritise workloads and perform effectively in a fast-paced operational environment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent qualification) in Logistics, Transport Management, Business Management, or a related discipline.
- Full UK Driving Licence (Class C or C+E advantageous).
Desirable
- Transport Manager Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).
- MPQC Connect Card or equivalent industry qualification.
- Experience within the aggregates, asphalt, quarrying, or heavy materials sectors.

Pay: £34,669.99-£45,000.00 per year
