Carpentry & General Construction Apprentice
TMC Construction
Job Type: Full-time Apprenticeship
Experience: Any apprenticeship level considered
Pay: £60–£100+ per day depending on experience and ability, with regular performance-based pay reviews
Essential: Full driving licence and own vehicle
The Opportunity
TMC Construction is looking for an enthusiastic and hardworking Carpentry & General Construction Apprentice to join our team.
We specialise in high-quality residential construction, including renovations, extensions and new-build projects across Sussex and the surrounding areas.
This is a varied, hands-on role. Carpentry will form a significant part of your development, but you'll also gain experience across the wider construction process.
We're looking for someone who wants to become a well-rounded and highly capable tradesperson, with a proper understanding of how a building goes together from structure through to finishing.
We will consider applicants at any stage of their apprenticeship, from someone starting out through to an apprentice who already has good site experience.
The Role
Working alongside our experienced carpenters, tradespeople and site foremen, you'll gain practical experience in:
- First and second-fix carpentry
- Timber framing and structural carpentry
- Roof structures
- Installation of structural steelwork
- External timberwork and cladding
- Insulation
- Plasterboarding and drylining
- Doors, linings, skirting and architraves
- Flooring
- General building and construction
- Reading drawings and setting out
- Site preparation and protection
- Working alongside other trades
- Understanding the construction process from start to finish
This isn't an apprenticeship where you'll spend your time sweeping floors and making tea. There will naturally be general site duties, particularly while you're learning, but the objective is to develop you into someone who can genuinely contribute to our projects and eventually work independently.
Essential Requirements
You must:
- Hold a full driving licence
- Have your own reliable vehicle
- Be able to travel independently to different sites across Sussex and the surrounding areas
- Be reliable and punctual
- Have a genuine interest in carpentry and construction
- Be willing to learn and take instruction
- Have a strong work ethic and positive attitude
Please do not apply if you do not have both a driving licence and your own vehicle.
What We're Looking For
Experience is useful, but attitude, reliability and work ethic are just as important to us as your current skill level.
We're looking for someone who:
- Genuinely wants a career in construction
- Wants to develop strong carpentry skills while learning wider construction
- Works hard without needing to be constantly pushed
- Listens and learns from experienced tradespeople
- Takes pride in their work
- Can take constructive feedback
- Shows initiative
- Keeps themselves busy and looks for the next job
- Respects clients' homes and maintains a clean, professional site
- Wants to progress and take on greater responsibility
Previous site experience and your own tools are advantageous but not essential.
Pay & Progression
Pay is £60–£100+ per day, depending on your current experience and ability.
Someone starting with limited experience would typically begin at £60 per day. An apprentice who already has useful site experience, their own tools and can demonstrate practical ability may start at a higher rate.
We operate a progression-based pay structure, with your first pay review at the end of your first month.
We don't expect you to know everything from day one. We do expect enthusiasm, reliability, effort and a willingness to learn.
Demonstrate those qualities and develop your ability, and we're happy to increase your pay quickly. Further increases will follow as you become more skilled, independent and valuable to the team.
Long-Term Opportunity
We're looking for someone we can invest in and develop over the long term.
For the right person, there is a clear opportunity to progress from apprentice to skilled tradesperson and, ultimately, into positions of greater responsibility within TMC Construction.
We set high standards and this opportunity won't suit everyone. But if you back yourself, enjoy construction and genuinely want to become good at what you do, there is significant opportunity to progress with us.
