Surveyor / Estimator
About the Role
The Wiggett Group is seeking an experienced Access Control Surveyor / Estimator to join our growing Fire & Security division.
This is a commercially focused role, responsible for surveying works, assessing technical requirements, costing jobs and producing accurate quotations for access control and associated security systems.
The successful candidate will use their technical knowledge and industry experience to review engineer reports, attend site surveys, assess remedial and installation requirements, calculate labour and material costs, and produce detailed quotations that are both technically accurate and commercially viable.
You will work closely with our Engineering, Operations, Contracts and Commercial teams, helping to ensure that works are correctly scoped, accurately priced and delivered within agreed budgets and timescales.
This role would suit an experienced Access Control Engineer, Security Systems Engineer, Estimator, Surveyor, QS or Technical Engineer looking to move into a more commercially focused position.
Key Responsibilities
Surveying & Technical Assessment
- Carry out site surveys to assess access control, security and associated systems.
- Identify required remedial, reactive, replacement and installation works.
- Review existing systems, equipment and infrastructure to determine the most appropriate solution.
- Produce clear scopes of works following surveys and engineer recommendations.
- Review drawings, photographs, reports and technical information to establish the full requirements of each job.
- Identify any additional works, access requirements, specialist equipment or subcontractor requirements.
- Provide technical input to Contracts Managers and engineers where required.
Estimating, Costing & Quoting
- Prepare accurate estimates and quotations for access control and security works.
- Price labour, materials, equipment, plant, access equipment and specialist subcontractors.
- Obtain and review supplier quotations and material costs.
- Calculate labour requirements and estimated installation/repair durations.
- Ensure all costs are accurately captured within quotations.
- Apply appropriate margins and ensure quotations meet commercial requirements.
- Review engineer reports and recommendations and translate these into accurate costs and scopes of works.
- Price reactive, remedial, planned maintenance, installation and variation works.
- Produce professional and clearly structured quotations for clients and internal contract teams.
- Review and revise quotations where requirements change.
- Identify opportunities for cost savings without compromising quality, compliance or system performance.
- Ensure quotations are completed accurately and within agreed timescales.
Commercial & Contract Support
- Support Contract Managers with variations, additional works and client approvals.
- Review requested works and assess whether they fall within existing contract scope or require additional pricing.
- Assist with tender pricing and larger project estimates when required.
- Develop and maintain standard pricing structures for common remedial and reactive works.
- Maintain accurate records of costs, quotations and pricing information.
- Work closely with Finance and Commercial teams to ensure pricing and margins are accurate.
- Assist with monitoring quoted versus actual costs to improve future estimating accuracy.
- Build strong relationships with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure competitive pricing.
- Challenge costs and specifications where appropriate to ensure the best commercial outcome.
Engineering & Operational Support
- Provide technical guidance to engineers where required.
- Review complex faults and proposed remedial solutions.
- Ensure proposed works are technically suitable, practical and cost-effective.
- Liaise with engineers to clarify job requirements before pricing.
- Help identify opportunities to improve first-time fix rates and reduce unnecessary return visits.
- Support Operations and Contracts teams with technical and commercial queries.
- Review completed works where required to ensure they reflect the original quotation and scope.
Systems & Equipment
The successful candidate should have a strong understanding of access control and associated security systems, including:
- Door entry and intercom systems
- Standalone and networked access control systems
- Magnetic locks and electric strikes
- Keypads, proximity readers and fob systems
- Exit buttons and door release mechanisms
- CCTV systems and interfaces
- Intruder alarm systems
- Automatic doors and associated access control equipment
- Networked security systems and associated infrastructure
Requirements
- Proven experience within the Access Control / Security Systems industry.
- Previous experience in an Estimator, Surveyor, QS, Costing, Technical or Senior Engineering position.
- Strong technical understanding of access control and security systems.
- Experience carrying out site surveys and assessing works requirements.
- Experience pricing reactive, remedial, installation or variation works.
- Strong understanding of labour, material and equipment costs.
- Ability to produce accurate scopes of work and detailed quotations.
- Strong commercial awareness and understanding of margins.
- Ability to interpret engineer reports, photographs, drawings and technical information.
- Excellent attention to detail and numerical ability.
- Strong negotiation and supplier management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple quotations, surveys and deadlines simultaneously.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
- City & Guilds, NVQ or equivalent Security Systems qualification.
- Previous experience within an estimating, surveying or QS environment.
- Experience working within social housing or local authority contracts.
- Experience with housing association maintenance contracts.
- Experience pricing works through a CAFM or contract management system.
- Experience with variations, additional works and client approvals.
- Knowledge of relevant British Standards and industry regulations.
- Experience with tender pricing and project estimating.
- Experience monitoring actual costs against quoted costs.

The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone who combines strong technical knowledge with a commercial mindset.
You may currently be working as an experienced Access Control Engineer or Technical Engineer and be looking to move into estimating and surveying, or you may already have experience as an Estimator, Surveyor or QS within the security systems industry.
The key requirement is the ability to understand the technical requirement, establish the scope, calculate the true cost and produce a commercially sound quotation.
Pay: £42,500.00-£47,500.00 per year
