The Role
Thomson Sawmills is a well-established, family-run timber processing business with over 40 years of experience. We are looking to recruit a motivated and practical Trainee Mechanical Maintenance Engineer / Fitter’s Mate to join our maintenance team and work alongside our experienced Mechanical Maintenance Engineers.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build a long-term career in engineering. You will receive hands-on training and mentoring while working on a wide range of heavy plant and production machinery in a busy sawmill environment.
No two days are the same, and the successful candidate will gain valuable experience across all aspects of mechanical maintenance and repair.
Duties Will Include
- Assisting experienced fitters with maintenance and repair work
- Learning mechanical fault-finding techniques
- Supporting planned preventative maintenance programmes
- Assisting with breakdown repairs on production machinery
- Working on conveyors, saw lines, cutters and associated equipment
- Assisting with bearing, belt and component replacement
- Learning hydraulic and pneumatic systems
- General workshop duties and housekeeping
- Assisting with welding and fabrication work where appropriate
- Developing knowledge of PLC-controlled machinery from a mechanical perspective

Must have:
- Qualifications in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Maintenance Engineering or a related subject, or
- Previous experience in an engineering, maintenance, agricultural, manufacturing, automotive or mechanical environment
- Experience using hand tools and workshop equipment

- Progression opportunity to Maintenance Engineer £38,000+
Salary
£29,000 - £32,000 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications.
Pay: £29,000.00-£32,000.00 per year
