We're looking for a passionate, hands-on Cheesemonger to join our specialised cheese and bottle shop team. This is not an entry-level role—you'll need some real experience in food service, retail, or handling specialty products to hit the ground running. Our shop focuses on fine British, natural, and organic wines alongside a brilliant selection of cheeses. If you already love cheese, enjoy chatting about food and drink with customers, and want to grow your skills in a fun, food- and wine-focused environment, this could be a great fit. You'll help run daily operations, offer solid advice on cheese and wine pairings, support wine sales, and maintain our high standards for quality, cleanliness, and safety.
Main Duties
- Guide customers on cheese choices—share flavours, suggest pairings (including with our fine British, natural, and organic wines), and do quick tastings to help them decide
- Offer recommendations on wine selections to complement cheese purchases, helping customers build perfect matches for their meals or occasions
- Assist with wine sales, including describing bottles, suggesting options, and handling transactions
- Create appealing cheese and wine displays that look great and make shopping easy
- Keep counters, storage areas, fridges, and the whole shop clean, organised, and up to food safety standards
- Handle food and wine prep/storage safely, following health rules to keep everything fresh
- Restock shelves, track inventory for both cheese and wine, and make sure we don't run low on favourites
- Join regular tasting sessions and training to keep building your knowledge of cheese and wine
- Help with shop events like tastings, pairings evenings, or small catering jobs when needed
- Always stick to hygiene and safety guidelines in every food and drink task
What We're Looking For
- At least 1 year of experience in food service, retail counters, restaurants, catering, or similar roles where you've handled food/products and dealt with customers directly
- A genuine interest in cheese and wine—bonus if you've worked with specialty items, cheese, charcuterie, gourmet products, or wines before
- Good customer service skills: friendly, patient, and comfortable chatting with people to help them find what they like
- Comfortable with physical work: standing for long shifts, lifting cheese wheels, wine cases, or boxes (up to 30-40 lbs), and using knives for cutting/wrapping
- Basic knowledge of food safety and handling (or willingness to brush up quickly)
- Enthusiasm for learning more about cheese and wine—we'll support you with training, but you should already be excited about the products!
This role is a solid opportunity to work in a niche cheese and bottle shop, deepen your expertise in cheese and natural/organic wines, build on your experience, and help customers discover great pairings every day. If you're passionate about food and drink and ready to bring some know-how to the team, we'd love to hear from you!
