Are you an organised, practical and people-focused supervisor who enjoys working in a busy public-facing environment? Kirklees Markets is looking for a Duty Manager to help lead the day-to-day operation of our markets across the district.
This is an exciting time for Kirklees Markets, with significant investment being made into the redevelopment of both Huddersfield and Dewsbury Markets. Temporary market facilities are in place to ensure traders can continue to operate and customers can continue to shop locally while these transformational projects are delivered.
About the Role
As a Duty Manager, you will play a key role in supporting the safe, efficient and welcoming operation of Kirklees Markets. You will help manage daily market activity, support staff on shift, work closely with traders, and make sure market facilities are ready for customers, visitors and the wider community.
Kirklees Markets operates 363 days a year, and you will work a variety of shifts across a 7-day rota. The role will involve working across different market locations, including temporary market facilities, town centre markets, specialist markets and public events.
Your Responsibilities Will Include
Leading and supporting Customer Service Assistants and other market staff during day-to-day operations.
Opening, closing, securing and checking market buildings, temporary facilities and operational areas.
Ensuring markets are safe, clean, welcoming and ready for traders, customers and visitors.
Carrying out daily operational checks, health and safety inspections, and reporting defects or maintenance issues.
Supporting the management of trader activity, stall allocations, trader queries and day-to-day operational issues.
Overseeing the set-up and dismantling of stalls, equipment and market infrastructure where required.
Supporting waste management, cleaning standards, public toilet checks and general site presentation.
Responding to incidents, emergencies, complaints and service issues in a calm and professional manner.
Supporting the operation of temporary market arrangements, including access, safety controls, trader support and business continuity requirements.
Helping to deliver specialist markets, community events and public events throughout the year.
Driving Council vehicles and supporting the movement of stalls, equipment and materials between sites where required.
Maintaining accurate records, checklists and reports to support safe and effective market operations.
Acting as an ambassador for Kirklees Council and demonstrating our values and positive behaviours at all times.
About You
Has experience of supervising staff, coordinating daily tasks or taking responsibility for operational delivery.
Has excellent customer service skills and can communicate confidently with traders, colleagues and members of the public.
Is reliable, flexible and able to work a varied shift pattern across a 7-day rota.
Can make practical decisions, solve problems and remain calm when dealing with difficult or urgent situations.
Understands the importance of health and safety in busy public environments.
Is willing to undertake physical and practical tasks, including supporting stall set-up, equipment movement and site checks.
Can work independently, lead by example and support a wider team across different locations.
Holds a full UK driving licence.
Takes pride in maintaining clean, safe and welcoming places for traders, customers and communities.
