About the role
Oaktree Academy is looking to appoint a passionate, resilient and trauma-informed SEMH Teacher to join us from September 2026.
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a specialist SEMH school/provision supporting young people who may have experienced significant barriers to education. Our pupils may have social, emotional and mental health needs, attachment and trauma-related needs, anxiety, low confidence, gaps in learning, or previous difficulties within mainstream education.
We are looking for someone who understands that learning does not happen until a young person feels safe, understood and supported. The right person will be able to build strong relationships, set clear boundaries, and help pupils re-engage with education at a pace that works for them.
You will deliver a range of subjects, which may include English, Maths, PSHE and project-based learning, depending on pupil needs and your own strengths. You will also play an important role in supporting routines, behaviour, safeguarding awareness and the wider culture of the Academy.
This role would suit a teacher who is creative, calm, consistent and genuinely motivated by helping young people who have not always had positive experiences of education.
Key responsibilities
- Plan, deliver and assess engaging lessons across a range of subjects
- Support pupils with SEMH needs to re-engage with learning and make progress
- Adapt teaching to meet individual needs, learning gaps and starting points
- Use trauma-informed, relationship-based approaches to support emotional regulation and positive behaviour
- Build strong professional relationships with pupils, families, carers and external professionals
- Work closely with the Headteacher and wider team to create a calm, safe and purposeful learning environment
- Maintain accurate records relating to attendance, progress, behaviour and safeguarding concerns
- Contribute to individual learning plans, risk assessments and pupil reviews where required
- Support the ongoing development of Oaktree Academy as it continues to grow
About you
We are looking for someone who is:
- A qualified teacher, ideally with QTS
- Experienced in, or genuinely passionate about, SEMH, alternative provision or specialist education
- Confident delivering core subjects such as English, Maths and PSHE
- Able to build trust with pupils who may find education, authority or relationships difficult
- Calm, consistent and confident when managing challenging behaviour
- Trauma-informed, reflective and relationship-focused in their approach
- Flexible and creative in adapting learning to individual pupils
- Organised, reliable and able to work well as part of a small team
- Resilient, empathetic and committed to helping young people succeed
