The Role
The Structural Engineer will undertake Structural Risk Assessments for higher-risk and residential buildings, including desktop reviews, site inspections and the evaluation of structural hazards in accordance with Building Safety Act requirements.
As part of this role, some of the duties include gathering and assessing building information, drawings, maintenance records and site observations to produce clear, proportionate and technically robust structural reports and recommendations.
The role will also provide specialist structural engineering advice to Building Safety Managers and clients, supporting Building Safety Case Reports, regulatory submissions and the ongoing management of structural safety risks.
Other duties include:
- Prepare high-quality technical reports and deliverables, ensuring assessments, findings and recommendations are accurate, evidence-based, proportionate and aligned with company quality standards.
- Support the delivery of Structural Condition Surveys and consultancy projects, providing structural engineering expertise across Tetra's building safety and compliance services.
- Identify and communicate structural risks and mitigation measures to clients and internal stakeholders, providing practical recommendations that support the ongoing management of structural safety.
- Maintain professional competence and technical knowledge of relevant legislation, industry guidance, British Standards, Eurocodes and Building Safety Regulator requirements to ensure services remain compliant and
- Contribute to the development and continual improvement of structural engineering services, templates, methodologies and best practice guidance to support business growth and service quality.
Skills and Experience Required
Essential Skills:
- Chartered Structural Engineer (CEng MIStructE or equivalent) with demonstrable experience in the assessment, design, inspection and appraisal of residential and higher-risk buildings.
- Strong knowledge of structural engineering principles, including steel, reinforced concrete, masonry and timber structures, structural behaviour, load paths, robustness and disproportionate collapse.
- Proven experience undertaking structural inspections and assessments, including condition surveys, defect investigations, structural risk assessments and technical reporting.
- Thorough understanding of the Building Safety Act 2022, Building Safety Regulator requirements, relevant British Standards, Eurocodes and industry guidance applicable to higher-risk buildings.
- Ability to review and interpret technical information, including structural drawings, calculations, specifications, survey data, historical records and construction documentation.
- Excellent technical report writing skills, with the ability to present complex engineering information clearly, accurately and proportionately to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, capable of identifying structural risks, evaluating evidence and providing practical, risk-based recommendations.
- Ability to provide technical support and advice to Building Safety Managers, clients and other stakeholders, responding confidently to structural engineering queries and regulatory requirements.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships with clients, contractors, regulators and internal teams.
- Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects, prioritise workloads and meet reporting deadlines while maintaining quality standards.
- Commitment to quality, professional ethics and continuous professional development (CPD).
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to sites across the UK as required.
Desired Skills:
- Experience preparing Structural Risk Assessments (SRAs) for higher-risk buildings under the Building Safety Act regime.
- Experience supporting Building Safety Case Reports, Gap Analysis Reports and responses to Building Safety Regulator Requests for Further Information (RFIs).
- Experience undertaking Structural Condition Surveys and broader structural consultancy commissions.
- Knowledge of façade systems, structural fire engineering principles and the assessment of external building elements.
- Previous experience working within a multidisciplinary building safety, fire engineering or construction consultancy environment.
- Familiarity with digital reporting systems, document management platforms and inspection software.
- Experience presenting technical findings directly to clients and senior stakeholders.
- Working knowledge of asset management principles and long-term structural maintenance planning.
- Mentoring or quality assurance experience supporting junior technical staff or reviewing engineering reports.
