Roots and Shoots is looking for an enthusiastic and reliable Garden Centre Assistant & Café Assistant to join our welcoming team.
This is a varied, hands-on position where no two days are quite the same. You will support the day-to-day running of both our garden centre and café, helping customers, maintaining attractive displays, serving food and drinks, and ensuring visitors have a positive experience from the moment they arrive.
Previous experience in retail, gardening, hospitality, or barista work is welcomed but not essential, as training and support will be provided.
What You'll Be Doing
As a Garden Centre Assistant & Café Assistant, your responsibilities will include:
Garden Centre Duties
- Welcoming customers and providing friendly, helpful customer service.
- Assisting customers with general enquiries and helping them find products.
- Watering and caring for plants and helping to keep plant displays healthy and attractive.
- Restocking plants, gardening products, compost, pots, and other merchandise.
- Keeping shelves, displays, pathways, and customer areas clean, tidy, and well presented.
- Helping with deliveries, unpacking stock, and moving products around the garden centre.
- Operating the till and handling cash and card transactions accurately.
- Supporting seasonal displays, promotions, and general garden centre activities.
- Following all workplace health and safety procedures.
Café Duties
- Greeting customers warmly and taking food and drink orders accurately.
- Preparing and serving hot and cold drinks, including coffee, tea, and speciality beverages.
- Assisting with the preparation and presentation of sandwiches, salads, baked goods, and other café favourites.
- Operating the till and handling customer transactions.
- Clearing tables and maintaining clean and welcoming dining and service areas.
- Restocking food, drinks, utensils, and other café supplies.
- Following food safety, hygiene, and health and safety procedures at all times.
- Helping the café team provide friendly, efficient service during busy periods.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who is positive, dependable, approachable, and willing to get stuck in.
Ideally, you'll have:
- A genuine interest in plants, gardening, retail, hospitality, or customer service.
- A friendly and confident approach when dealing with customers.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- The ability to stay organised and work effectively in a busy environment.
- A willingness to work across both the garden centre and café as required.
- Basic maths skills and confidence handling customer transactions.
- A willingness to learn new skills and take on a variety of tasks.
- A responsible approach to cleanliness, food hygiene, and workplace safety.
- Barista, retail, café, or garden centre experience would be an advantage but is not essential.
- Availability to work weekdays and weekends.
As this is an active role, you should also be comfortable spending time on your feet and carrying out practical tasks around the garden centre.
