Company: Applied Reasoning Ltd
Job Type: Freelance / Self-Employed
Location: Fully Remote, UK based
Hours: Fully Flexible (Set your own schedule)
About the Role
Are you a Chartered Mechanical Engineer looking for a unique, highly flexible consulting role where you can leverage your years of technical expertise without the burden of project management or site visits? We are a fast-growing tech startup bridging the gap between heavy engineering and advanced Artificial Intelligence—and we need your industry-tested brainpower.
We are seeking Chartered Engineers to engage in high-level technical debate and deliberation. You will work alongside other elite engineering minds to dissect, deliberate, and solve diverse, complex mechanical engineering problems. The structured data, logic, and rationale generated during your debates will be directly used to train next-generation AI models in advanced engineering problem-solving, risk assessment, and design rationale.
What You Will Do
- Lead Technical Debates: Participate in structured, remote discussions with fellow experts to tackle complex, multi-disciplinary mechanical engineering scenarios.
- Articulate First-Principles Logic: Break down your problem-solving methodologies, clearly mapping out the exact physics principles, industry standards, trade-offs, and safety factors that dictate a correct solution.
- Critique & Stress-Test: Evaluate and stress-test engineering solutions generated by peers, graduates, or AI prototypes, identifying nuanced failure modes or logical blind spots.
- Shape AI Architecture: Provide the high-fidelity, expert-level reasoning data required to teach AI models how to "think" and solve problems like a seasoned professional.
What We Are Looking For
- Professional Status: Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with a recognised professional body (e.g., IMechE or equivalent).
- Deep Industry Expertise: Extensive experience in mechanical engineering, with a robust understanding of first-principles design, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, stress analysis, or materials science.
- Exceptional Communication: The ability to articulate complex technical ideas, safety implications, and regulatory logic clearly and persuasively.
- Analytical Objectivity: A passion for rigorous technical debate and the ability to dissect an argument based purely on data and engineering logic.
Why Apply?
- Total Autonomy & Flexibility: This role is fully flexible and ad-hoc. Fit your contributions around existing consulting commitments, retirement, or personal projects.
- 100% Remote: Work from anywhere in the world with a reliable internet connection.
- No Administrative Overhead: Focus purely on pure engineering logic—no CAD modeling, client management, site safety audits, or project deadlines.
- Pioneer the Future: Play a direct role in shaping how AI will assist the next generation of engineers, establishing the logical guardrails for autonomous engineering design.
Note: This is a freelance, self-employed position. Successful candidates will be responsible for managing their own tax and national insurance contributions.
