The Opportunity
We are looking for Senior Civil Engineers to join our established Civil Engineering team in London. Our team forms part of Arup’s Energy, Water and Resources (EWR) South group which consists of approximately 130 engineers and technicians. Together we deliver work in a variety of markets such as Transport, Energy, Water, Industry, Science and Property.
This role is focused on leading civil engineering design and delivering multidisciplinary projects from a technical and commercial perspective. You would take ownership of civil design packages, preparing and reviewing drawings, reports, specifications and presentations, while coordinating resources and monitoring project performance.
The role covers a range of infrastructure areas, including earthworks, roads and streets, public realm, utilities, flood risk and drainage, with opportunities to work across projects in the UK and internationally.
Alongside the technical responsibilities, the role has a strong leadership and client-facing element. You would work closely with clients and other disciplines, support bids and business development, contribute to technical training and help develop the wider team. Over time, the role would also involve line management and mentoring of engineers and technicians.
The ideal candidate will be Chartered or Incorporated, have strong civil engineering design experience, be comfortable managing multiple projects and demonstrate a commitment to technical excellence and continuous improvement.
Reporting to the Civil Engineering South Team Leader, you will be responsible for:
- Managing multidisciplinary engineering projects, planning resources and monitoring commercial performance
- Leading the civil engineering design on projects. This includes preparation and review of technical deliverables including drawings, reports, specifications and presentations
- Producing bid documents and supporting general business development activities
- Contributing to a culture of technical excellence and the development of technical skills within the wider team through planning and delivery of initiatives and training
- Embracing our Culture, Equity and Inclusion strategy and vision, both through your own behaviour and influencing others
- In due course, line managing a small number of technical staff (engineers and technicians) including appraisals and performance development.
Is this role right for you?
Highly motivated individuals who have achieved Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status with a relevant professional institution, such as ICE or equivalent.
Your qualifications, skills and experience will include:
- Degree in Civil Engineering (typically MEng, BEng or MSc) or similar
- Strong technical background in one or more areas relevant to civil engineering (earthworks, roads and streets, public realm, utilities, flood risk and drainage) as a core specialism, as well as a wider interest in a complementary aspect of infrastructure development (planning and project management, sustainability, carbon management, infrastructure resilience, etc).
- Experience of relevant design tools which may include AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, Navisworks, Bently 3D AECOsim, Microdrainage and GIS.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, and an ability to interact collaboratively with clients and other members of professional teams with confidence
- An ability to manage a complex and varied workload often involving multiple concurrent projects
- A track record of successful project completion in UK and/or internationally
- An ability to motivate and lead others
