People & Development Coordinator – Help Us Build a People Experience That Actually Means Something
Location: Sherburn in Elmet, Leeds
Salary: £32,000 – £38,000 per year, depending on experience
Contract: Full-time, Permanent
Reporting to: Head of People
This Isn't Traditional HR. And We Don't Want It To Be.
At Allerton Damp Proofing, being People Powered isn't something we've written on a wall because it sounds good.
It's genuinely how we run the business.
We're a growing property services company with around 90 people across our office and field teams, and our culture has been built around recognising people, developing them, backing them and creating an environment where people can do great work and actually enjoy being part of the company.
As we continue to grow, we're looking for a People & Development Coordinator to work closely with our Head of People and help us take that even further.
This isn't a traditional HR Administrator or Generalist role.
Yes, there are processes that need to run brilliantly. Records need to be right. Payroll information needs checking. DBS applications need completing. Training needs booking.
But there's a lot more to it than that.
You might spend one morning coordinating recruitment for our next group of tradespeople, the afternoon supporting an apprenticeship programme, and the following day representing Allerton at a school careers fair or delivering an internal training session.
We're looking for someone who wants to own things, improve things and make things happen.
The EXCITING Stuff...
- Unlimited access to the on-site Allerton Gym, including Peloton equipment, free weights and functional training kit
- State-of-the-art breakout facilities with kitchen, games and relaxation space
- Monthly Value Award Ceremonies recognising the people who bring our values to life
- Two-yearly all-expenses-paid Team Events
- Weekly car valeting and on-site hairdressing
- Monthly Break & Connect – lunch on us, plus time to switch off together
- Team events, socials, competitions and prize draws
- The opportunity to get involved in projects across recruitment, learning, apprenticeships, culture and employee experience
- Genuine scope to shape areas of the People function as you develop
- A Head of People who will give you context, responsibility and room to learn rather than keeping the interesting work to themselves
The USUAL Stuff (Done Properly)
- £32,000 – £38,000 per year, depending on experience
- 32 days annual leave, inclusive of statutory holidays
- Additional week of paid leave during our Christmas closure
- Company pension scheme
- Free on-site parking
- Training and development support
- Modern systems, including HiBob
- The tools and technology you need to do your job properly
- A growing business where there is genuine opportunity to develop your career
WE ARE
People Powered. Purpose Led. Impact Driven.
Allerton was built by a family and grown by its people.
We've grown quickly, but we don't want growth to mean becoming corporate, distant or losing the things that make people enjoy working here.
Our culture is deliberately visible.
We celebrate great work. We talk to each other. We recognise people. We invest in development. We try new things. We challenge processes that no longer make sense. And we're comfortable admitting when something could be better.
Our People function exists to help create the conditions where people can perform, develop and feel part of something.
That's the mindset we're looking for in the person who joins us.
THE ROLE
As our People & Development Coordinator, you'll work closely with the Head of People across the operational side of our People function.
Your job isn't simply to “support HR”.
Over time, you'll own recurring People processes and make sure they happen properly without someone having to chase them.
That could mean owning a recruitment campaign from advert to onboarding, coordinating apprenticeship programmes, maintaining our training matrix, processing DBS and CSCS applications or organising an upcoming careers event.
You'll become someone our managers and employees can rely on to know what's happening, what's outstanding and what needs to happen next.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
Recruitment & Onboarding
Recruitment is a regular part of life at Allerton as we continue to grow.
You'll help us keep it organised, responsive and human.
You'll be involved in:
- Advertising vacancies and managing applications
- Coordinating interviews and candidate communication
- Supporting recruitment for both office and skilled trade roles
- Managing recurring recruitment campaigns for roles such as technicians and tradespeople
- Carrying out initial candidate screening where appropriate
- Preparing offers and coordinating pre-employment checks
- Managing onboarding processes through HiBob
- Keeping candidates and hiring managers informed throughout the process
- Attending recruitment events, careers fairs and community events
- Helping us build future talent pipelines rather than only recruiting when we have an immediate vacancy
Learning & Development
This is a big area for us — and it's only getting bigger.
You'll help coordinate and increasingly take ownership of:
- Our company training matrix
- Mandatory and refresher training
- Internal learning programmes
- External training providers and course bookings
- Qualification and competency records
- Training expiry dates and renewal requirements
- Technician development and skills progression
- New starter induction
- Creating learning materials and resources
- Supporting and, as your confidence grows, delivering internal training sessions
We don't just want to record that somebody attended training.
We want development to actually make people better at their jobs.
Apprenticeships, Work Placements & Early Careers
We're investing more heavily in apprenticeships and early careers, and this will be an important part of the role.
You'll help coordinate:
- Apprenticeship programmes
- Relationships with colleges and training providers
- Apprentice onboarding and reviews
- Progress and qualification tracking
- Work experience and work placement opportunities
- School and college partnerships
- Careers fairs and employment events
- Community and social value employment initiatives
- Opportunities to bring new people and new skills into the industry
As this area grows, there is real potential for you to make it your own.
People Compliance & Administration
Some things simply need to be right.
You'll take responsibility for processes including:
- DBS applications and renewals
- CSCS card applications and renewals
- Right to Work documentation
- Qualification and certification records
- Employee documentation
- Maintaining accurate records within HiBob
- Starter, change and leaver administration
- Monitoring outstanding People actions and documentation
- Supporting audits and client compliance requirements
You'll need to be someone who notices when something is missing rather than waiting for somebody else to spot it.
Payroll Support
You'll work with the Head of People to help prepare and check payroll information, including:
- Starters and leavers
- Pay changes
- Absence information
- Deductions and adjustments
- Employee data changes
- Checking information before payroll is processed
- Responding to straightforward payroll queries
You don't need to arrive as a payroll specialist.
You do need to be comfortable with numbers and understand that when you're dealing with somebody's pay, getting it right really matters.
People Projects & Culture
This is where the role gets broader.
We're constantly looking at how we can improve the experience of working at Allerton.
You might get involved in:
- Employee recognition
- Engagement activities
- Benefits
- Internal communications
- Wellbeing initiatives
- Company events
- Progression frameworks
- Employee feedback
- HR system improvements
- Social value projects
- New People processes and initiatives
If something can make Allerton a better place to work, there's a good chance the People team will be somewhere in the middle of it.
YOU ARE
You're probably someone who gets a strange amount of satisfaction from making something work properly.
You're organised, but not rigid.
You're comfortable following processes, but you're equally comfortable asking:
“Why do we do it this way?”
You'll ideally be:
- Highly organised and capable of managing multiple priorities
- Proactive and comfortable taking ownership
- Warm, approachable and good with people
- Confident communicating with everyone from apprentices to directors
- Comfortable standing up in front of a group when needed
- Good at building relationships with external partners
- Curious and keen to learn
- Detail-focused and accurate
- Confident using technology and learning new systems
- Comfortable working in a business where things move quickly
- Able to work independently without disappearing into a silo
- Happy to ask for help when you need it
- Someone who follows things through rather than assuming somebody else will pick them up
You don't need to know everything already.
But when you encounter something new, your instinct should be:
“I'll figure that out.”
YOU WILL NEED
- Previous experience in HR, People, recruitment, learning and development, apprenticeships or a strong coordination/administration role
- Strong organisational and administrative skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Confidence using Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Outlook and Word
- Confidence learning digital systems such as HiBob
- Good numerical ability and attention to detail
- Experience working with confidential information
- The ability to manage multiple deadlines and competing priorities
Experience in any of the following would be particularly useful:
- Recruitment coordination
- Learning and development
- Apprenticeships
- Early careers
- Payroll
- HR systems
- DBS or compliance processes
- Training delivery
- Working with colleges or training providers
A CIPD qualification is welcome, but it isn't essential.
We're much more interested in how you think, how you work and what you could become than whether you've followed a traditional HR career path.
WORKING WITH OUR HEAD OF PEOPLE
You'll work very closely with our Head of People.
That means you'll get exposure to the wider People function and understand why decisions are being made, rather than simply receiving tasks without context.
You'll be encouraged to ask questions, challenge ideas, bring suggestions and gradually take ownership of your own areas.
The expectation isn't that you'll arrive knowing how to do everything.
The expectation is that, once you've learned a process, you'll increasingly own it.
If you're waiting to be given a daily to-do list, this probably isn't the role for you.
If you'd rather understand what we're trying to achieve, work out what needs doing and get on with making it happen, you'll probably fit in very well.
OUR VALUES (And We Actually Mean Them)
Our values aren't corporate wallpaper.
They're how we talk about the behaviours we expect and celebrate across the company.
- Straight Up – Honest, clear and respectful
- Live Wire – Curious, adaptable and proactive
- Got Your Back – We support each other and work as a team
- Top Drawer – We care about quality and doing things properly
- Call of Duty – We take ownership and see things through
- The Feels – We care about people and the impact we have on them
Every month, our Value Awards recognise people across the business who have genuinely demonstrated them.
If these sound like things you'd naturally value too, there's a good chance you'll enjoy working here.
WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS
Allerton is growing.
More people means more recruitment, more development, more apprentices, more qualifications, more opportunities and more responsibility to make sure we keep the culture that got us here in the first place.
We don't want the People function to become increasingly administrative as the company grows.
We want it to become more useful, more visible and more impactful.
This role gives us the operational foundation to do that.
You'll help make sure the important things happen consistently, while giving our Head of People more capacity to work on the bigger People and operational challenges that come with growing the business.
And as the function develops, there's plenty of opportunity for this role to develop with it.
THE HIRING PROCESS
We'll review applications based on your experience, transferable skills and — importantly — why this kind of People role appeals to you.
Suitable candidates will be invited for an initial conversation with our Head of People.
It won't be an interrogation.
We'll want to understand how you work, what motivates you, what you've owned previously and whether you can see yourself enjoying the way we do things at Allerton.
Want to Stand Out?
We know a CV only tells us so much.
If you’d like to give us a better sense of the person behind the application, you’re very welcome to send something additional to [email protected].
It doesn’t need to be formal. We’d love to hear a little about the People/HR professional you consider yourself to be — or the one you’re aspiring to become.
Tell us what motivates you, what parts of People and Development you genuinely care about, the kind of culture you thrive in, what you’d love to get involved in more of, or simply something about you that we wouldn’t learn from your CV.
There’s no set format and no “right” answer. A few thoughtful paragraphs is more than enough.
We’re looking for someone who shares our belief that People should be more than policies and processes, so if that sounds like you, this is your opportunity to tell us why.
