Purpose of the Role
To inspire and educate pupils through the delivery of outstanding English Language and English Literature teaching. The successful candidate will foster a love of reading, writing and critical thinking, enabling pupils to achieve excellent academic outcomes while contributing fully to the wider life of the school.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
- Plan, prepare and deliver engaging and challenging English lessons to pupils across the relevant age range.
- Teach English Language and English Literature in accordance with the school's curriculum and examination specifications.
- Differentiate teaching to meet the needs, abilities and learning styles of all pupils.
- Monitor, assess and record pupil progress accurately and regularly.
- Provide constructive feedback that supports pupil development and achievement.
- Prepare pupils for internal and external examinations.
- Maintain high standards of classroom management, behaviour and pastoral care.
Curriculum Development
- Contribute to the development and review of schemes of work and curriculum resources.
- Stay informed of current developments in English teaching and educational best practice.
- Integrate technology and innovative teaching methods into lessons where appropriate.
Pastoral Responsibilities
- Act as a form tutor or pastoral mentor where required.
- Support the academic, social and emotional wellbeing of pupils.
- Promote safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion throughout all aspects of school life.
Co-Curricular Involvement
- Contribute to the school's co-curricular programme, including activities such as debating, creative writing, drama, reading clubs or school publications.
- Support educational visits, trips and enrichment activities.
Professional Responsibilities
- Attend departmental meetings, staff meetings, parents' evenings and school events.
- Maintain positive relationships with pupils, parents, colleagues and external stakeholders.
- Participate in professional development activities and performance management processes.
- Uphold the values, policies and ethos of the school.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in English or a related subject.
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or recognised teaching qualification.
- Evidence of continued professional development.
Essential Experience
- Experience of teaching English successfully in a secondary school setting.
- Experience of preparing pupils for public examinations.
- Proven ability to inspire and motivate learners of varying abilities.
- Experience within the independent school sector, working alongside learners with SEMH needs.
Essential Knowledge and Skills
- Excellent subject knowledge in English Language and Literature.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Effective classroom management skills.
- Ability to use assessment data to improve pupil outcomes.
- Strong organisational and administrative abilities.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience within the independent school sector, previous of an SEMH.
- Ability to teach across a broad age range, including A-Level.
- Experience leading co-curricular activities.
- Familiarity with digital learning platforms and educational technology.
