Weldserve is a specialist engineering company providing much needed support to the welding industry. We are a recognised service centre for many of the main welding equipment manufacturers including ESAB, LINCOLN ELECTRIC, MILLER, MIGATRONIC and KEMPPI. Services include maintenance, repair, machine compliance testing, calibration, validation and LEV testing.
This apprentice role has arisen due to exceptional demand for our services and the need to train engineers to meet our own high standards and maintain the best possible service to our customers.
The role
The role would be predominantly workshop based, particularly during the early stages of the apprenticeship. The apprentice would work alongside experienced service engineers in the service centre, where equipment can be safely inspected, repaired, calibrated and tested.
The apprentice would gain practical experience across electrical, mechanical and welding-equipment engineering, including the servicing, maintenance, calibration, testing and repair of welding machines and associated equipment.
They would develop an understanding of how welding power sources and associated equipment operate and learn how to systematically identify and diagnose faults.
There would also be a customer/site-based element to the role. This would include travelling to customer premises to collect and deliver welding machines, deliver goods and consumables, and potentially assist experienced engineers with servicing, installation, inspection or fault-finding work.
Driving will therefore form an important part of the role and the successful applicant will need to hold a full UK driving licence.
Typical technical duties would include:
- Receiving, inspecting, cleaning and preparing welding equipment for service or repair.
- Assisting engineers with the dismantling, inspection, repair and reassembly of welding machines.
- Carrying out routine servicing and preventative maintenance.
- Assisting with electrical and mechanical testing and fault-finding.
- Replacing worn or faulty components.
- Checking cables, plugs, connections, cooling systems, fans, switches and other components.
- Carrying out machine calibration and performance testing.
- Using a machine compliance tester to carry out appropriate safety and compliance checks.
- Recording faults, work completed, parts used, calibration results and test results on service documentation.
- Ensuring machines and goods are secured correctly during transportation.
- Maintaining a clean, safe and organised workshop and vehicle.
- Managing and checking tools, components and spare parts.
- Following company procedures, risk assessments, driving requirements and health and safety procedures.
This will be undertaken on a range of equipment including:
- MIG/MAG welding machines.
- TIG welding machines.
- MMA/arc welding equipment.
- Plasma cutting equipment.
- Welding generators and associated equipment.
- Welding torches, guns, leads and earth systems.
- Welding fume extraction equipment.
- Welding positioners and associated workshop equipment.
- Load banks for welding machine testing and calibration.
- Machine compliance/electrical safety testers.
- Electrical test and diagnostic equipment.
- Hand tools, power tools and general engineering workshop machinery.
The successful applicant will need to have:
- Gained at least 5 GCSE’s as Grades A* to C, including Maths, English and Science as a minimum
- Completed NVQ Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations
- Completed at least a Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering.
- A full UK driving licence.
