This position would ideally suit someone who is self-employed or freelance.
Salary: £13 p/h
Closing date for application forms: midnight, 18th September
Interview Dates: 22nd and 23rd September (TBC)
Start Date: 5th October
To work across both our premises: Cambridge Contemporary Art on Trinity Street and Cambridge Contemporary Crafts on Bene’t Street.
You must be flexible with working hours. We plan our rotas one month in advance, but occasionally offer hours at short notice to cover staff sickness and other eventualities.
When hiring a new member of staff, we look for a friendly and approachable person who can confidently engage with customers. You will be able to offer guidance to someone looking for a particular work of art, discuss how it has been made, and gauge what the customer is looking for. You will need to feel comfortable talking to customers about their preferences, advising them on what may be a suitable piece to buy, and confidently recommending alternatives when they are unsure.
The right candidate will have previous retail experience and exceptional customer service skills. At times, this job is physically demanding and requires lifting heavy boxes and works of art.
To help keep the business running smoothly, you will assist with closing the till at the end of the day, maintaining accurate sales sheets, creating price labels, and carrying out general tasks such as cleaning, dusting, and painting walls and plinths to keep the gallery looking smart.
You will also be responsible for unpacking deliveries from artists and checking that they match the delivery notes, adding price labels to new work, and packing work that has sold online.
The displays in the gallery and craft shop change regularly, showcasing artists at all stages of their careers. You may be part of the team hanging new exhibitions and meeting artists as they deliver their work.
As both premises are open to the public seven days a week, you will need to be vigilant and security-minded at all times.
We are a small, close-knit team and are looking for the right person to become a valued part of it. We are therefore looking for someone who is interested in making a long-term commitment to the role and to the business. The successful candidate will be conscientious, enthusiastic, eager to learn, and able to work well as part of a small team, where everyone plays an important role.
