About the Role
Study Mind is seeking an experienced SEN Tutor to provide 1:1 face-to-face tuition for a primary-aged student with an EHCP and a primary diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
The student is awaiting a specialist school placement, and this provision will provide an important educational bridge. The successful tutor will deliver a highly differentiated KS2 curriculum while supporting communication, attention, sensory regulation and independence.
About the Student
Our student is an engaging young learner who benefits from highly visual, practical and structured learning. Maths and numeracy are relative strengths, while additional support is required across English and Science.
He has significant difficulties with attention, listening, processing instructions and independent learning. Short, focused activities are therefore essential to maintaining his engagement.
The Role Will Include
- Delivering 15 hours of 1:1 home-based tuition each week.
- Teaching differentiated KS2 English, Maths and Science.
- Using short, focused activities suited to the student's attention and processing needs.
- Supporting communication, social interaction and emotional regulation alongside academic learning.
- Using an iPad and technology to reduce the physical demands of extended handwriting.
- Working alongside the family and professionals involved in the student's EHCP.
Ideal Tutor Experience
We're looking for someone with experience supporting:
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
- Communication and interaction difficulties.
- Attention, listening and executive-functioning needs.
- Sensory processing and proprioceptive differences.
- Fine and gross motor difficulties.
- Developmental and independence needs.
- Primary/KS2 English, Maths and Science.
- EHCP, EOTAS or specialist home-tuition provision.
Student Interests
Using the student's interests will be important for engagement. He particularly enjoys dinosaurs, LEGO, water play, farm animals, visual games and touchscreen/iPad activities.
Learning Approach
The successful tutor will:
- Use visual timetables, Now/Next and "first...next..." structures.
- Break instructions into short, concrete steps with appropriate processing time.
- Use visual, kinaesthetic and multi-sensory teaching with plenty of repetition and over-learning.
- Incorporate regular movement, sensory and prompted toilet breaks.
- Provide a calm, low-arousal environment with predictable routines and transitions.
- Respond positively to dysfluent speech, echolalia and stimming without unnecessarily drawing attention to them.
- Recognise signs of sensory or emotional overwhelm and adapt demands appropriately.
Important Requirements
A female tutor is preferred by the family. Applicants should have strong experience supporting children with Autism and more complex sensory, communication and developmental needs.
The student requires close adult supervision due to limited danger awareness and also has personal-care needs. A parent/responsible adult will be present in the home throughout sessions.
Tuition Details
Location: Home tuition in Redditch, Worcestershire (B98).
Hours: 15 hours per week, term time, ideally spread across Monday to Friday.
Availability: Morning tuition is strongly preferred. Afternoon sessions should be avoided.
