Location: You will be collected and return to/from your home to your first assignment which could be throughout Worcestershire including Kidderminster, Worcester, Evesham, Bromsgrove, and Redditch.
The Role
We are recruiting Passenger Assistants to support children and adults travelling safely to schools, day centres, and specialist services across Worcestershire. You will work alongside a Driver to ensure all passengers—some with additional needs—receive a safe, comfortable, and supportive journey. We are looking to appoint enthusiastic and flexible individuals who are calm under pressure with good communication and people skills concerning our passengers.
This is a split‑shift role (mornings and afternoons) involving travel on dedicated transport routes.
Candidates must be fluent in spoken, written, and reading English to meet communication, safety, safeguarding, and training requirements.
Responsibilities
- Assist passengers during boarding and disembarking from vehicles, always ensuring their safety.
- Provide support to passengers with mobility challenges or other special requirements.
- Communicate effectively with passengers to understand their needs and provide appropriate assistance.
- Maintain a friendly and professional demeanour while interacting with passengers and colleagues.
- Ensure that all safety protocols are followed during transport, including the proper use of seatbelts and safety equipment.
- Report any incidents or concerns regarding passenger welfare to the appropriate authorities promptly.
- Collaborate with drivers and other team members to ensure smooth operations and timely service delivery.
Mandatory Training – Passenger Assistant Training Scheme (PATs)
All successful applicants must complete the 2‑day PATs training course, which includes practical and interactive sessions covering:
Day 1 & Day 2 Training Includes:
- Understanding the needs of individual passengers and customer‑care‑based service delivery
- Practical demonstrations and hands‑on practice with wheelchair clamping systems, tail‑lift equipment, and specialist safety equipment
- Identifying transportable vs. non‑transportable wheelchairs
- Duty of Care, confidentiality, safeguarding, and reporting procedures, including how to report suspected abuse
- HSE legislation, risk assessments, and MHOR 1992 guidance
- Emergency contingency plans and procedures for missing passengers, unexpected changes, or carers not present on return journeys
- PPE, infection control, and managing bodily fluid incidents
- Communication expectations between the vehicle, base, and Worcestershire County Council
- Multiple-choice assessments to demonstrate competency (80% pass required)
Requirements
- Fluent spoken, written, and reading English.
- Compassionate, patient, and reliable.
- Confident communicating with children, adults, and colleagues.
- Able to work split shifts (AM & PM).
- Willing to complete the mandatory 2‑day PATs course.
- Ability to follow safety procedures and safeguarding responsibilities.
- The course is fully funded, and we provide transport from your home to the training centre and back.
Please note that attendance and a successful pass of the required training are essential requirements for this role. Your application can only proceed once all mandatory training has been completed and passed successfully.
Disclosure Barring Service Checks
Due to the nature of the work a criminal record check via the DBS disclosure service will also be required.
As part of your assessment, you will be required to demonstrate knowledge, experience and skills in assisting and safeguarding passengers as well as emergency first aid at work
This post is exempt under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of criminal records via the Disclosure and Barring Service before the appointment is confirmed. Legal working time for Home to School Transport drivers is calculated as follows:
- AM Journey: Working time starts when you pick up your first passenger and ends when your last passenger is dropped off at school.
- PM Journey: Working time starts when you collect your first passenger from school and ends when your last passenger is dropped off.
Travel from your home to the first passenger pick-up point, and travel from the final passenger drop-off point back to your home, is not considered working time for the purposes of pay and the National Minimum Wage Regulations 2025.

Work Location: In person
