Detective Constable Entry Programme (DCEP)
Start a career that matters and make a difference everyday
Incorporates a ‘uniform first’ approach where you will spend time working in a front-line uniformed police constable role, before starting your detective learning. We believe having front-line experience will provide our future detectives with greater exposure to the skills, knowledge and experience needed to become a more rounded officer and more effective investigator, while providing you with the necessary contextual knowledge of policing London.
It’s a four-year programme and the training is based on the national policing curriculum and focuses on preparing you to become a substantive police constable and a well-rounded detective.
Through different roles including public protection and local investigations you’ll enhance your skills and knowledge. You’ll be fully supported throughout your training.
You will be regularly assessed on your knowledge, skills and behaviours but you will not be required to undertake an academic qualification as part of your training.
As a detective you’ll work as part of a team to deliver a high-quality service to the public we serve. You’ll support victims of crime when they need your help the most and bring offenders to justice. You’ll investigate and analyse evidence to uncover the truth. Your job will be varied – from undertaking search warrants and making arrests to seeing a case through to its conclusion at court. All whilst reducing crime and building trust with Londoners. Ultimately making London safer.
Pay
You will receive a starting salary of £42,210. The salary includes allowances.
Your salary increases to £44,844 after two years for DCEP, upon satisfactory completion of probation. Salary including allowances.
Salary may increase each year up to £59,994 after 5 years.

Academic requirements
To be eligible for our Detective Constable Entry Programme you must hold, or be working towards one of the following:
A recognised UK degree (level 6) qualification or,
An equivalent overseas degree supported by an ENIC Statement of Comparability (to confirm the UK level 6 equivalent of your overseas qualification), and a functional English Language Level 2 qualification.
Age
If you are 17 when you submit your application, you will be able to progress through our recruitment process, but you will not be able to start your training until you are 18.
Nationality
If you’re from outside the UK, it’s essential that you have indefinite leave to enter or to remain in the UK.
Physical fitness
You will need to pass our fitness test. If you do some form of regular exercise, you should have no issue meeting that requirement. You must also meet the police eyesight standards agreed by the College of Policing.
Tattoos
Some tattoos will stop you working for the Met depending on what they depict and where on your body they are.
Criminal conviction/caution
If you do have any criminal convictions or cautions on record you can still apply, eligibility will depend on the age and nature of the offence.
Membership of groups or organisations
You will not be able to join the Met if you are a member of a group and/or organisation that contradicts our values or ethics and our commitment to inclusion.
Training
Candidates must be able to meet the essential requirements of the training programme and role.
This role includes a number of core operational duties intrinsic to the role and required to ensure effective operational delivery. These include those listed below but is not limited too.
Conducting complex investigations,
investigative interviews with suspects/ witnesses/ victims
crime scene management
managing PIP2 investigations from initial report to final conclusion.
