Main purpose of the role
The Pensions Developer is responsible for developing, configuring and maintaining systems and software used across Trafalgar House. The role ensures high quality, efficient and secure technical solutions that support business operations, data integrity and member experience. The postholder provides technical expertise in SQL, data manipulation and system configuration, supporting both project delivery and BAU activities. They work closely with Business Analysts, Developers and system users to translate requirements into robust technical solutions and ensure smooth implementation, testing and transition into live operation.
Key responsibilities
Service Delivery & Technical Expertise
- Develop, configure and support all software and systems used by Trafalgar House.
- Write secure, efficient SQL queries including select and update statements, stored procedures and views.
- Analyse, interrogate and manipulate data using SQL Server and coding skills.
- Map data feeds into IntelliPen using IntelliFeed and SQL, ensuring full understanding and documentation of data requirements.
- Produce development assets that adhere to technical standards and support high quality member and client experience.
- Translate functional and technical specifications into system solutions that are fit for purpose.
- Provide technical support to the business, resolving issues and enabling smooth system operation.
Operational Coordination & Workflow Management
- Plan and prioritise development tasks to meet project timelines and operational needs.
- Work with Business Analysts and system users to scope requirements and coordinate development activity.
- Support integration of applications by collaborating with other developers and ensuring alignment with standards and processes.
- Ensure effective release planning and smooth handover into live service.
- Maintain structured, accurate reporting of development status, progress and issues.
Quality Control, Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure all development is fully documented and compliant with regulatory, architectural, security and operational standards.
- Support and perform appropriate testing processes, ensuring robust quality assurance prior to release.
- Maintain and update IntelliPen system components, including database updates, extracts, reports and change request testing.
- Monitor data accuracy, solution performance and adherence to standards, escalating risks as required.
- Demonstrate awareness of ISO22301 and relevant policies within the Business Continuity Management System, including required actions in an incident.
Process Improvement & Change
- Contribute to process improvements by identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency, quality and the user experience.
- Lead or support small scale improvement initiatives within development or system processes.
- Maintain up to date documentation, identifying opportunities to streamline or standardise development activity.
- Support new business and onboarding activities through system analysis, data conversion routines and technical delivery.
Professional qualities
Essential
- Technical experience in a SQL database development environment with strong understanding of relational databases.
- Skilled in coding SQL queries, including complex select and update logic, with commitment to continuous learning.
- Experience with one or more of: XML, VB.net, VBA, XSLT, HTML.
- Strong analytical and problem solving capability.
- Strong MS Office skills, particularly Excel.
- Ability to work independently or collaboratively with minimal supervision.
- High level of accuracy, quality focus and structured approach to work.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
Desirable
- Understanding of pensions administration and/or payroll.
- Experience with IntelliPen.
- Exposure to data migrations, new client implementations or large scale data manipulation projects.
