Maintenance Manager
Location: Alderford Lake, Whitchurch, Shropshire
Hours: 4 or 5 days per week (primarily Monday to Friday)
Weekend Working: Occasional weekends are required to support major events, with the potential to be on-call for emergency situations.

Alderford Lake is one of Shropshire's leading outdoor visitor attractions, offering open water swimming, watersports, family activities, woodland, play areas, seasonal events, food and drink, and beautiful outdoor spaces. Our site is constantly evolving, and we're looking for someone who can help us maintain and improve everything that makes Alderford Lake such a special place to visit.
About the Role
This isn't your average maintenance manager role.We're looking for someone who enjoys variety, thrives outdoors and takes pride in maintaining a unique visitor attraction. No two days are the same. One day you could be repairing timber structures, inspecting play equipment, maintaining buildings or working on landscaping projects; the next you could be preparing the site for a large event, coordinating contractors, responding to an emergency repair or ensuring our health and safety systems are fully compliant.This is a hands-on role where you'll lead by example, taking ownership of the maintenance, safety and presentation of the entire site. You'll work closely with the wider team to ensure Alderford Lake remains safe, welcoming and operating to the highest standards throughout the year.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all day-to-day maintenance across the Alderford Lake site.
- Carry out planned and reactive maintenance to buildings, visitor facilities and infrastructure.
- Maintain and repair wooden structures including decking, fencing, bridges, picnic areas, outdoor furniture and play equipment.
- Maintain footpaths, landscaping, fencing and external areas to a high standard.
- Carry out routine inspections and preventative maintenance programmes.
- Plan, prioritise and organise maintenance schedules and seasonal improvement projects.
- Manage contractors and ensure work is completed safely, efficiently and to a high standard.
- Take ownership of health and safety within the maintenance function, ensuring compliance with current legislation.
- Complete and maintain risk assessments, inspection records, maintenance logs and statutory compliance documentation.
- Carry out regular safety inspections across the site and promptly address any hazards.
- Support the planning, setup and breakdown of major events and seasonal attractions.
- Respond quickly and effectively to maintenance issues and emergencies.
- Help develop and improve the site through new projects and continuous improvements.
- Operate and maintain site machinery and equipment safely.
- Participate in an emergency on-call rota for weekends when required.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who combines practical skills with excellent organisation and a proactive approach.You'll ideally have:
- A broad range of practical maintenance skills across buildings, grounds and infrastructure.
- Excellent carpentry or woodworking skills, with experience maintaining and constructing timber structures.
- Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation, compliance and best practice.
- Experience producing and managing risk assessments and maintenance records.
- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to plan maintenance programmes effectively.
- The ability to prioritise workloads and solve problems independently.
- Confidence managing contractors and coordinating multiple projects.
- Experience using a wide range of hand and power tools.
- Experience operating machinery and maintenance equipment safely.
- A flexible approach to work and the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
- Willingness to work outdoors throughout the year in all weather conditions.
- A positive, hands-on attitude and a willingness to get involved wherever needed.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work well with colleagues, contractors and visitors.
- The ability to work independently while also supporting the wider Alderford Lake team.
- A full UK driving licence.
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Experience working within visitor attractions, country parks, estates, farms, holiday parks or outdoor leisure businesses.
- Relevant maintenance, construction or health and safety qualifications.
- IOSH or NEBOSH Health & Safety qualification - not essential.
- Forklift Truck Licence (or willingness to obtain one).
- Large Vehicle Licence (Category C1/C or equivalent) - not essential.
- Experience operating tractors, telehandlers, diggers or other plant machinery.
- First Aid qualification.
- Chainsaw or other countryside management qualifications (advantageous but not essential).
