Cambridge Rape Crisis Centre has been providing free, specialist, and confidential support to women and girls across Cambridgeshire who have experienced rape and all forms of sexual violence for over 40 years.
Our services include anonymous telephone and email support, face-to-face counselling, peer support groups, and advocacy services to help navigate the medical, police, and court processes. Additionally, we offer organisational training, community awareness programs, and advocate for the rights of survivors. Our work relies on the support of our dedicated funders and supporters, allowing us to support more women and girls impacted by sexual violence.
Role description
This is a sessional role for a Children and Young People's Counsellor to work with clients based in Peterborough and surrounds areas (Fenland). Travel is essential.
Clients will be streamlined into one geographical area per day of work. The counsellor will provide specialist therapeutic support to children and young people who have experienced sexual violence and abuse.
Client allocation to be discussed and agreed depending on capacity and resources. Each client attending weekly 50 minute sessions for 12-15 weeks. Timings of appointments to be negotiated with the counsellor and CRCC.
Day-to-day tasks include conducting individual counselling sessions, developing tailored support plans, maintaining accurate records, and collaborating with other professionals and agencies to ensure comprehensive care.
Essential requirements
- To have completed a recognised Counselling Diploma and to be a member of the BACP or equivalent.
- Qualification or training in counselling with relation to children/young people.
- At least 450 hours post-qualifying counselling experience, if less than this, related/relevant experience is considered.
- Understanding and knowledge of the nature of sexual violence and its effects on survivors.
- Excellent understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and confidential working practices.
- Use of own vehicle and ability to travel
- A strong and demonstrable commitment to supporting people who have been subjected to child sex abuse, child sexual exploitation, rape and sexual violence, and a clear understanding of the particular difficulties facing them.

Hourly rate
£50 for attended sessions, £25 for short notice cancelled (within 24 hours) or did not attend sessions. Counsellors are engaged on a self-employed basis and responsible for own tax and NI payments.
The contract is sessional and dependent on the funding available to CRCC.
