THE POSITION
Bities is looking for a professional and dependable self-employed owner-driver to work with us as a trusted driver-colleague in delivering our flagship Man & Van relocation service.
This is not a driving-only position. As the face of Bities, you will take ownership of each assignment from arrival to completion, helping customers load, carry, protect, secure and unload their belongings. You will communicate clearly, make sound decisions, solve practical problems and remain calm when circumstances change.
We are deliberately selective because every driver helps define what Bities becomes. Experience is valuable, but character matters more: we can teach our systems, but not personal responsibility, work ethic, self-respect or the instinct to do the right thing without constant supervision. This role suits someone who wants to become stronger, more capable and more dependable through real responsibility and to earn greater trust as the business grows.
ABOUT THE WORK

- Student moves
- Furniture, appliance, Marketplace and store collections
- Inter-city and nationwide relocations
- Office, event and specialist transport
WHAT WE EXPECT
- Arrive punctually, properly prepared and professionally presented
- Greet customers warmly and communicate clearly in spoken English
- Assist fully with loading and unloading; protect and secure belongings correctly
- Drive carefully, smoothly and responsibly
- Remain calm, helpful and solution-focused, using sound judgement
- Follow confirmed instructions and report delays or problems before making changes
- Recognise when an item requires two people or specialist equipment
- Use a smartphone, navigation and booking applications confidently
PHYSICAL CAPABILITY
Man & Van work is physically demanding. Candidates must demonstrate:
- A safe and controlled lift and carry of a 32 kg kettlebell or equivalent assessment load
- Correct manual-handling technique and stamina for repeated work
- Awareness of personal limits and when a two-person lift or equipment is required
The assessment tests genuine working capability and judgement, not risk-taking. Unsafe lifting will not be accepted.
VEHICLE, DOCUMENTS AND INSURANCE
Applicants must provide:
- A suitable pre-approved LWB, XLWB or equivalent large van
- A clean, well-maintained and professional-looking vehicle with a secure load area, ULEZ compliance and a valid MOT where applicable
- Protective blankets, securing straps and a trolley
- A valid UK driving licence and evidence of the right to work in the UK
- Self-employed status, UTR, and appropriate business vehicle, goods-in-transit and public liability insurance
SELECTION PROCESS
Shortlisted applicants will complete:
- Application, document and van screening
- Interview and vehicle-equipment inspection
- Practical manual-handling and driving assessment
- Paid trial assignment
Successful candidates receive an introduction to Bities' booking and communication systems before beginning assignments.
WORKING ARRANGEMENT
- Direct contract for services with Bities Ltd as a self-employed owner-driver
- Assignments are offered individually. You may accept or decline before confirmation; once accepted, you are expected to arrive punctually and complete the work professionally
- No guaranteed minimum amount of work; you remain responsible for your own tax, National Insurance, vehicle and operating expenses
- We aim to offer full-day schedules of up to nine hours, paying from £200 plus agreed mileage. Rates for specialist vehicles, long-distance work or larger assignments may be agreed separately
