My client is a leading manufacturer of specialist construction materials, operating from our modern production facility on Northwick Road, Canvey Island. Our close-knit team of around 30 employees works across production, maintenance, despatch and office functions, creating a friendly, supportive environment where everyone plays an important role.
We're looking for an experienced Mechanical Maintenance Engineer to help keep our manufacturing plant operating safely, efficiently and reliably.
The Role
As our Mechanical Maintenance Engineer, you'll be responsible for maintaining and improving the performance of our mechanical plant and production equipment. You'll carry out planned preventative maintenance, respond to breakdowns, identify root causes of equipment failures and contribute to continuous improvement projects that help maximise production efficiency.
This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys problem-solving, takes pride in high-quality workmanship and thrives in a busy manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM), corrective maintenance and emergency breakdown repairs.
- Inspect, maintain and repair production equipment including mixers, conveyors, pumps, screw feeders, compressors, bagging machines, motors, gearboxes and dust extraction systems.
- Diagnose mechanical faults, carry out root cause analysis and implement long-term solutions.
- Respond quickly to breakdowns to minimise production downtime.
- Monitor equipment condition and recommend improvements to increase reliability and efficiency.
- Identify and support continuous improvement initiatives to reduce waste, improve plant performance and lower maintenance costs.
- Work closely with production teams to maximise plant availability.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, service reports and equipment history.
- Manage critical spare parts and assist with procurement of replacement components.
- Ensure all work is completed safely and in accordance with health, safety and environmental procedures, including permit-to-work and isolation systems.
- Support contractors during shutdowns, major repairs and installation projects.
- Assist with capital projects including plant upgrades, machinery installations and commissioning of new equipment.
- Provide technical support during factory expansion and process improvement projects.
- Share knowledge and support the development of maintenance colleagues and production operators.
About You
We're looking for someone who has:
- NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Maintenance or an equivalent qualification (or significant relevant experience).
- Proven experience within industrial mechanical maintenance, ideally in manufacturing, heavy engineering, marine engineering or process industries.
- Excellent mechanical fault-finding and troubleshooting skills.
- Strong knowledge of electric motors, bearings, hydraulics, pneumatics, conveyors and material handling systems.
- The ability to read engineering drawings, maintenance manuals and technical schematics.
- Good understanding of preventative and predictive maintenance techniques.
- Welding, fabrication and mechanical fitting experience.
- Practical workshop skills, including the ability to machine and repair components using equipment such as lathes and milling machines.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- A positive attitude, a good sense of humour and the ability to work well as part of a small team.
Working Hours
- Monday to Friday
- 09:00am – 17:00pm
- 37.5 hours per week
During peak production periods, additional shifts and occasional weekend working may be required to meet business demands. Overtime is paid on a pro-rata basis.

Pay: £40,000.00-£45,000.00 per year
