We are looking for a Bid Manager to lead our work-winning activity in the South- West of England. Based at our purpose-built Avonmouth office, you will take ownership of bids that support the continued growth of our established regional civil engineering business.
This is a visible and influential role. You will bring together technical, commercial and operational specialists to develop strong civil engineering solutions and turn them into clear, compelling submissions. You will lead the bid process, challenge the team and use your judgement and creativity to give us the best chance of winning the right work.
Walters is a family-owned business employing around 1,000 people across the UK. We work across infrastructure, plant, development and energy, from regional civil engineering schemes to major national projects such as HS2. This gives our teams the opportunity to work on varied and challenging projects. We plan properly and take pride in delivering a good job. Our approach is professional but flexible, and we trust capable people to use their judgement, take responsibility and make a difference.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES
Take ownership of bids from early positioning through to final submission. Set a clear strategy and programme, allocate responsibilities and keep the team focused on the actions needed to win.
Analyse tender documents to understand the client’s objectives, priorities and evaluation criteria, then ensure our submission responds clearly to every requirement.
Develop the win strategy, key messages and tender responses, turning complex technical and commercial solutions into clear, concise and compelling content.
Lead and motivate bid teams, creating momentum and securing commitment from colleagues, partners and specialists who may not report directly to you.
Bring together operational, technical, commercial and external contributors, resolving gaps, testing the developing solution and securing timely decisions.
Manage reviews, approvals and submission requirements so every bid is compliant, persuasive and delivered on time. Use sound judgement to protect the critical issues when time is limited.
Present our people, experience and solutions in an engaging and visually effective way that differentiates Walters and makes our offer easy to understand.
Build knowledge of clients, opportunities and competitors well before tenders are released, helping shape our approach and position us to win.
Seek feedback after every bid and capture evidence, lessons and reusable content that strengthen future submissions and improve how we work.
QUALIFICATIONS AND CAPABILITIES
Typically, at least five years’ experience in bid management, work winning or a closely related role within civil engineering, construction or a comparable sector.
A strong track record of planning, coordinating and delivering high-quality tender submissions to demanding deadlines.
Excellent writing, editing and information-gathering skills, with the ability to absorb large volumes of material and turn complex information into clear, concise and compelling responses.
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to motivate, influence and challenge contributors at every level, including people who do not report directly to you.
Highly organised and dependable, with the judgement to prioritise effectively, make sensible compromises and protect quality, compliance and deadlines under pressure.
An outgoing and confident communicator who can build positive relationships, engage bid teams and present our offer effectively to colleagues, partners and clients.
Creative and commercially aware, with the ability to present information in an engaging way while applying sound judgement and strong attention to detail.
