Job Summary
We are currently seeking an experienced Structured Cabling Engineer / Fibre & Data Engineer to join our team working on a large industrial site in the Sheffield area.
The role will involve the installation, termination, testing, fault finding and maintenance of structured cabling and fibre optic networks across a large and varied industrial environment.
This is not solely a fibre splicing position. We are looking for someone with a good all-round structured cabling background who is comfortable working with both OS2/OM4 fibre optic and copper data infrastructure, including SWA fibre cables.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to carry out tasks including:
- Installation of structured data cabling systems
- Installation and routing of OS2 and OM4 multi-core fibre optic cabling
- Preparation and fusion splicing of multi-core OS2 and OM4 fibre
- Fibre jointing, breakout and termination
- Installation and termination of fibre patch panels and enclosures
- Termination of Cat6/Cat6A copper data cabling into patch panels, outlets and cabinets
- Fibre and copper network testing and fault finding
- Identification and diagnosis of fibre and data network faults
- Testing of installed fibre links and interpretation of test results
- Copper data certification/testing
- Installation and glanding of SWA fibre and data cables
- Correct dressing and management of cables within cabinets, containment and patching areas
- Cable routing using existing tray, basket and containment systems
- Installation and organisation of cabling within network cabinets
- Cable identification, labelling and asset identification
- Identification and tracing of existing/legacy data and fibre cabling
- Maintaining a high standard of cable management and workmanship
- Recording test results and identifying failed or defective links
- Working from drawings, cable schedules and network information
- Working safely within an operational heavy industrial environment
- Working at height using MEWPs where required
Essential Experience
Applicants should have demonstrable experience in:
- Fibre optic installation and fusion splicing
- OS2 single-mode fibre
- OM4 multimode fibre
- Multi-core fibre preparation and splicing
- SWA fibre cable preparation, glanding and termination
- Copper structured cabling installation and termination
- Cat6/Cat6A termination
- Fibre and copper testing
- Network/data cabling fault finding
- Patch panel and network cabinet installation
- Cable management, labelling and identification
- Reading cable schedules and installation drawings
Experience working within large industrial, manufacturing or engineering environments would be highly advantageous.
Preferred Additional Experience
Experience installing cable containment would be beneficial, although this is not essential for the role.
Ideally, candidates will have some practical experience with:
- Galvanised cable tray and tray work
- Cable basket
- Steel and PVC trunking
- Galvanised conduit
- Conduit bending and installation
- Unistrut/support systems
- Fabrication and installation of containment supports
- Drilling, fixing and general containment installation
- Modifying or extending existing containment systems to accommodate new data and fibre cabling
Candidates who are comfortable carrying out both structured cabling and associated containment installation would be particularly suited to the varied nature of the works.
Qualifications / Certifications
The following are required or highly desirable:
- Fibre Splicing / Fibre Networks qualification or demonstrable equivalent experience
- CSCS / ECS card or equivalent site safety qualification
- IPAF 3a & 3b
- Asbestos Awareness
- Full UK Driving Licence
- Relevant structured cabling/data installation qualifications desirable
Candidate Profile
We are looking for someone who can work independently as well as part of an installation team and who takes pride in producing a high standard of work.
The successful candidate should be confident carrying out an installation from cable routing and preparation through to termination, splicing, testing, labelling and fault diagnosis, rather than being limited to one particular element of the installation.
Good fault-finding skills and the ability to work methodically around existing live network infrastructure are particularly important.
The ability to install or modify cable containment where required would be an advantage and would make the candidate particularly well suited to the role.
Pay: £200.00–£250.00 per day
