Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and confident Nurse Unit Manager to lead and manage a 35-bed specialist unit providing care for individuals with complex healthcare needs and acquired brain injuries (ABI).
This is a senior leadership role with responsibility for the day-to-day clinical and operational management of the unit. The successful candidate will provide strong leadership to the nursing and care team, ensure excellent standards of care, and support residents with complex clinical, neurological and rehabilitation needs.
We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in complex care, acquired brain injury, neurological care or rehabilitation services. Previous rehabilitation or neuro-rehabilitation experience would be a strong advantage.
Key Responsibilities
- Take overall responsibility for the day-to-day management of the 35-bed unit.
- Lead, supervise and support nurses, senior carers and care staff working within the unit.
- Ensure consistently high standards of safe, effective and person-centred care.
- Oversee the care of residents with acquired brain injuries, neurological conditions and complex healthcare needs.
- Ensure care plans, risk assessments and clinical documentation are accurate, person-centred and regularly reviewed.
- Coordinate complex nursing interventions and ensure residents' clinical needs are safely managed.
- Monitor residents' health and ensure appropriate action is taken when there is any deterioration or change in condition.
- Work closely with GPs, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and other multidisciplinary professionals.
- Promote rehabilitation, independence and quality of life for residents wherever possible.
- Provide clinical leadership, advice and support to the nursing and care team.
- Ensure safe medication management and oversee medication audits and clinical checks.
- Maintain high standards of infection prevention and control.
- Ensure safeguarding, health and safety and clinical governance procedures are followed.
- Manage staffing levels and deployment within the unit to ensure safe and effective care.
- Support recruitment, induction, supervision, competency assessments and performance management of staff.
- Identify staff training and development needs and support continuous professional development.
- Lead team meetings, clinical reviews and handovers where required.
- Support investigations relating to incidents, complaints, safeguarding concerns and clinical issues.
- Monitor quality indicators and contribute to audits and continuous improvement within the unit.
- Build positive relationships with residents, families, professionals and external agencies.
- Work closely with the Registered Manager and senior management team to maintain high standards across the service.
- Ensure the unit operates in line with CQC requirements, NMC standards and relevant UK healthcare regulations.
Essential Requirements
- Registered Nurse – RGN, RMN or RNLD – with a valid UK NMC PIN.
- Previous experience in a senior nursing, clinical leadership or management role.
- Experience working within complex care, nursing care, neurological care or a similar specialist service.
- Strong clinical knowledge and the ability to manage residents with complex healthcare needs.
- Experience leading and managing nursing and care teams.
- Good knowledge of care planning, risk assessment, medication management and clinical documentation.
- Good understanding of safeguarding, infection control and CQC standards.
- Strong leadership and people-management skills.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to manage a busy 35-bed unit effectively and confidently.
- A compassionate and person-centred approach to care.

Experience in any of the following would be highly advantageous:
- Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)
- Neuro-rehabilitation
- Rehabilitation services
- Neurological conditions
- Complex nursing care
- Spinal injury
- Challenging or complex behaviours
- Long-term neurological conditions
- Post-acute or step-down care
Previous experience within rehabilitation or neuro-rehabilitation would be a particular advantage.
About the Candidate
This role would suit an experienced Unit Manager, Clinical Lead, Deputy Manager or Senior Nurse who is confident managing a large specialist unit and leading a multidisciplinary care team.
You should be clinically strong, organised and comfortable taking responsibility for staffing, quality, compliance, resident care and the overall performance of the unit.
