The Cross Scythes is a busy, well-loved pub in Totley, known for great food, warm hospitality, and being a real part of the local community. We’re proudly part of The Northern Collective, an independent hospitality, retail & leisure group operating across the Peak District and South Sheffield. Our group spans restaurants, bakeries, and retail-led food concepts, with a strong focus on quality, consistency, and developing great people.
We’re now looking for a talented, motivated, and reliable Sous Chef to join our kitchen team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced chef who is passionate about fresh food, enjoys leading a team, and wants to develop their career within a growing independent hospitality group.
As Sous Chef, you'll work closely with the Head Chef to lead the kitchen team, oversee day-to-day kitchen operations, and play a key role in delivering consistently high-quality dishes and an excellent guest experience.
Responsibilities
- Supporting the Head Chef with the day-to-day running of the kitchen.
- Taking responsibility for the kitchen in the Head Chef's absence.
- Leading and motivating the kitchen team during busy service periods.
- Ensuring all dishes are prepared, cooked, and presented to a consistently high standard.
- Working closely with the Head Chef on menu development and bringing new ideas to the table.
- Supporting the training, development, and mentoring of Chefs de Partie, Commis Chefs, and Kitchen Assistants.
- Maintaining excellent food safety, cleanliness, and hygiene standards throughout the kitchen.
- Monitoring stock levels, supporting ordering, and ensuring effective stock rotation.
- Managing portion control and minimising food waste.
- Ensuring kitchen prep is well planned and service runs efficiently.
- Maintaining high standards of organisation and cleanliness across all areas of the kitchen.
- Helping to create a positive, supportive, and professional kitchen environment.
About You
We're looking for a chef who takes pride in their work, enjoys leading and developing a team, and is committed to producing outstanding food every day.
You will ideally have:
- Previous experience as a Sous Chef or a strong Chef de Partie ready to take the next step.
- A genuine passion for fresh, seasonal cooking.
- Strong knowledge of food safety, hygiene, and kitchen best practices.
- Experience leading and supporting a kitchen team during busy services.
- Good organisational and time-management skills.
- The ability to remain calm, focused, and effective under pressure.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
- A positive attitude and a genuine interest in developing both yourself and those around you.
- A proactive approach and the ability to work closely with the Head Chef as part of a strong leadership team.

Pay: From £13.25 per hour
Expected hours: No more than 48.0 per week

Experience:
- Kitchen management: 2 years (required)
