Brighton & Hove City Council is looking for a reliable and motivated person to join our Estates Service team.
This is a varied, hands-on role where you will help maintain the cleanliness, safety, and overall appearance of our housing estates. You’ll travel across the city in a council van, delivering essential cleaning and environmental services that improve residents’ daily lives.

About the role
We welcome applications from people with a range of experiences. You don’t need to meet every requirement to apply.
You will ideally:

Hold a full, valid UK driving licence
- Have experience in cleaning or environmental services (this could be in any setting)
- Be able to carry out practical, physical tasks and work outdoors in different weather conditions (reasonable adjustments can be discussed)
- Be comfortable working both independently and as part of a team
- Have a positive approach to customer service and working with residents
- Be proactive and willing to learn new skills
- Have basic IT skills or be willing to learn
- Be flexible and able to work across different areas of the city
In this role, you will:

Clean communal areas including stairwells, corridors, and outdoor spaces to a high standard (e.g. sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, disinfecting)
- Remove bulk waste and fly-tipping to help keep estates clean, safe, and welcoming
- Drive a council vehicle to carry tools, equipment, and materials across your designated area
- Carry out basic vehicle checks to ensure your van is safe and ready for use
- Report repairs, safety concerns, graffiti, and environmental issues
- Support fire safety by keeping communal areas clear of hazards
- Build positive relationships with residents, responding to queries in a helpful and respectful way
- Assist with simple maintenance tasks, such as replacing bulbs or minor repairs (training can be provided)
- Keep clear and accurate records of your work

Additional information
Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is less than 37 hours or term-time only.
We are a workplace that supports flexibility and employee wellbeing in the way we work whilst providing the best service for our customers. Team and service working arrangements are designed to support both employee work life balance and team collaboration. These would be part of your individual working arrangements alongside any personal preference agreed with your manager in advance of joining. Your contractual location will be the designated council office for your team and travel to and from your contractual location would be at your own expense.
