Trainee School Photographer
Location: Aberdeenshire, Moray and the Highlands
Job type: Full-time, term-time
Pay: Competitive salary, depending on experience
Mileage: Business mileage reimbursed at the company’s applicable mileage rate
Turas Photo Ltd is looking for an enthusiastic Trainee Photographer to join our small, friendly team as our portfolio of school, nursery and sports-photography work continues to grow.
We photograph children in schools and nurseries, as well as sports teams, across Aberdeenshire, Moray, the City of Aberdeen and the Highlands. This is a varied, active role, with a different location and group of people to photograph most days.
More than anything, we are looking for someone warm, friendly and naturally engaging; someone who can help children of all ages feel comfortable, relaxed and confident in front of the camera, creating genuine smiles and natural photographs. You will also need to communicate clearly and professionally with teachers, school office staff, parents and other adults throughout the day.
You will initially work as an Assistant Photographer, shadowing and supporting more experienced members of the team. As your skills, confidence and understanding of our approach develop, you will be trained to take on more responsibility and work independently.
Previous professional photography experience is helpful, but a formal photography qualification is not required. Full training, equipment and support will be provided. A good practical understanding of photography and a genuine interest in developing your skills are important.
What you’ll do
- Initially assist and shadow experienced photographers at schools, nurseries and sports venues
- Help children feel relaxed, included and comfortable in front of the camera
- Create a positive, fun and well-organised photography experience
- Communicate professionally with school and nursery staff throughout each visit
- Set up, use and safely pack away photography equipment
- Develop the skills and confidence to photograph independently
- Work independently at locations once trained, while remaining part of a supportive small team
- Represent Turas Photo professionally and reliably at all times
What we’re looking for
- A bubbly, friendly and outgoing personality
- A natural ability to engage with children of all ages and put them at ease
- Confidence speaking with both children and adults in a professional, approachable manner
- The ability to encourage natural smiles while keeping sessions calm, positive and efficient
- An interest in photography and a working knowledge of basic camera use
- Self-motivation, confidence and the ability to work independently
- A professional, reliable and well-presented approach
- Flexibility with working hours, including early starts, particularly during the autumn term
- A full, clean UK driving licence and access to your own vehicle
- Willingness to travel regularly, mainly to schools between Aberdeen and Inverness
- Physical fitness for lifting, carrying and setting up photography equipment
- Willingness to complete a PVG check and provide two references before starting
Experience working with children—whether in education, childcare, coaching, activity groups or another setting—would be highly beneficial, though it does not need to have been in a photography role.
Ideally, you will be based in a central location for travel between Aberdeen and Inverness, preferably within Moray.
What you’ll receive
- A competitive annual salary, depending on experience
- Business mileage reimbursed at the company’s applicable mileage rate
- Term-time working, with school holidays, weekends and quieter periods of the academic year generally free from photography commitments
- All photography equipment provided
- Full training and ongoing support from experienced photographers
- The opportunity to develop your photography skills as part of a friendly, growing team
To apply, please send your CV and a covering letter to [email protected]. Please tell us about any experience you have working with children, your photography experience or interest, and why you feel you would be a great fit for the role.
