Role Overview
We are seeking a master-level Classic Body Restoration Specialist to join our dedicated coachbuilding department. In this role, you will be responsible for the complete structural and aesthetic restoration of historic British vehicle bodies—from bare-chassis assessment through to precision panel reconstruction.
Working with rare hand-formed aluminum and steel panels on iconic marques like Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin, and Jaguar, you will combine traditional coachbuilding techniques with precision modern alignment standards to prepare chassis for EV integration.
Key ResponsibilitiesMetal Fabrication & Panel Restoration
- Hand-fabricate replacement repair sections and full panels using traditional metal-shaping machinery (English wheel, power hammer, shrinker/stretcher, swage block).
- Execute repairs and historic metal preservation on both hand-shaped aluminum and steel coachwork.
- Repair frame rails, sills, floor pans, and bulkhead structures while maintaining exact chassis alignment and geometry.
Precision Joining & Welding
- Perform high-precision TIG and MIG welding, gas welding, and traditional coachbuilding joining methods suitable for thin-gauge aluminum and vintage steel.
- Execute clean, structural, and cosmetic welds that require minimal filler work prior to paint prep.
Coachwork Alignment & EV Preparation
- Dry-fit panels, doors, bonnets, and boot lids to achieve consistent panel gaps and shut-lines across complex curved body structures.
- Collaborate with mechanical and electrical engineering teams to adapt body structures for battery box enclosures, high-voltage wiring channels, and structural reinforcement.
- Perform complete corrosion removal, lead loading/wiping, and structural rust treatment.
Quality Control & Workshop Standards
- Perform thorough dimensional checks against factory blueprints.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment following all health and safety guidelines.
- Mentor apprentice fabricators and collaborate closely with the paint preparation team to ensure smooth panel handovers.
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience: 5+ years in classic vehicle body restoration, prototype fabrication, or high-end automotive coachbuilding.
- Metalwork Mastery: Proven expertise in hand-shaping sheet aluminum and steel using traditional coachbuilding tools (English wheel, planishing hammer, wheeling).
- Welding Proficiency: Advanced TIG/MIG welding skills, specifically with light-gauge metals and aluminum.
- Precision & Fit: Deep understanding of coachbuilt body construction, panel gapping, and lead loading/body soldiering techniques.
- Problem Solving: Ability to read technical drawings, work from 3D scan data, or recreate missing/corroded panels from scratch.
- Desirable: Direct experience with 1940s–1960s British coachbuilders (e.g., Park Ward, James Young, Mulliner) or prototype sheet metal fabrication.
