The Role
This is a highly hands-on technical role for an engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, understanding how things work and developing bespoke solutions that make a meaningful difference to people’s lives.
Working as part of our Engineering team in our Chessington workshop, you will service, repair, program, modify and adapt a wide range of mobility equipment, from sophisticated standing powerchairs to off-road handbikes. You will diagnose electrical and mechanical faults, determine the best solution and carry out repairs and modifications to a high standard.
There is significant variety to the role, and no two days are the same.
Our clinicians regularly prescribe equipment in unique combinations that may never have been assembled before. This creates unusual engineering challenges and requires us to develop tailored mobility, seating and assistive technology solutions. You may be adapting existing equipment one day and designing, testing and fabricating a bespoke component the next, including using CAD and 3D printing.
You will work closely with our clinicians and experienced engineers to turn complex clinical requirements into safe, practical and effective engineering solutions.
We provide comprehensive training to help you develop your technical capabilities and progress within the role. This includes significant mentoring and hands-on training from our experienced engineers, alongside industry-recognised external training. For someone with the right aptitude and ambition, this offers excellent progression within a highly specialised and rewarding engineering field.
This is a permanent, full-time role working five days per week, including alternate Saturdays.
The Person
We are looking for someone who thrives on technical challenges and takes genuine satisfaction from solving difficult engineering problems.
Ideally, you will have a relevant engineering qualification, such as a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline. However, we are equally interested in candidates who have developed strong practical engineering capabilities through industry experience.
A genuine passion for hands-on engineering is essential. You might demonstrate this through your qualifications and professional experience, but equally through personal projects, building, repairing, modifying or making things in your own time.
You will need to be a fast learner who is keen to develop quickly, take ownership and continually expand your technical capabilities.
The strongest candidates will demonstrate many of the following:
- A relevant engineering qualification, such as Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
- Strong practical engineering skills and a genuine enthusiasm for hands-on engineering
- A natural problem-solving mindset and an enjoyment of unusual or technically challenging work
- The ability to diagnose mechanical and/or electrical faults methodically
- Strong communication skills, particularly when working with clinicians and colleagues from non-engineering backgrounds
- A high level of organisation and attention to detail
- A drive to continually improve engineering quality, performance and innovation
- Experience with CAD software and/or 3D printing would be advantageous, but is not essential
Above all, we are looking for someone with the curiosity, practical ability and determination to become an exceptional engineer in a highly specialised field.
