Health & Safety Advisor & Workforce Training Lead

Location
Office-based with regular travel to client sites and workforce locations.
Job Purpose
To lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of health, safety and wellbeing standards across the business, while delivering engaging training and development programmes to our construction workforce.
This role combines traditional health and safety responsibilities with workforce training and competency development, helping ensure that all supplied labour operates safely, professionally and in accordance with client requirements and industry best practice.
The successful candidate will act as a trusted advisor to management, clients and operatives, creating a positive safety culture whilst developing the skills and knowledge of our workforce.
Key Responsibilities
Health & Safety Management
- Conduct site inspections, audits and safety reviews across client projects.
- Ensure compliance with UK health and safety legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work Act and Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses and unsafe acts, producing reports and corrective actions.
- Monitor and analyse safety performance data and identify improvement opportunities.
- Develop and review risk assessments, method statements and safe systems of work.
- Support compliance with ISO 45001 and company health and safety management systems.
- Maintain health and safety documentation, records and reporting systems.
- Liaise with clients, contractors and enforcement agencies where required.
- Assist with tender submissions and prequalification questionnaires relating to health and safety.
- Promote positive mental health, wellbeing and occupational health initiatives across the workforce.
Workforce Training & Development
- Design, develop and deliver internal health and safety training programmes.
- Conduct workforce inductions for new starters and supplied labour.
- Deliver toolbox talks, safety briefings and refresher training sessions.
- Create engaging training materials using practical construction-based examples.
- Assess workforce competency and identify training needs.
- Develop training matrices and monitor qualification expiry dates.
- Coordinate external training providers and qualifications where required.
- Support apprentices, new entrants and inexperienced workers in developing safe working practices.
- Maintain accurate training records and competency evidence.
- Work with operational teams to improve workforce capability, professionalism and compliance.
Workforce Engagement
- Build strong relationships with operatives and site management teams.
- Act as a visible and approachable safety champion.
- Encourage workforce participation in safety improvement initiatives.
- Conduct behavioural safety observations and coaching sessions.
- Gather workforce feedback and contribute to continuous improvement programmes.
- Promote a culture where safety, quality and productivity work hand in hand.
Business Improvement
- Develop innovative safety campaigns and workforce engagement initiatives.
- Identify trends from audits, inspections and incidents.
- Recommend practical improvements to systems, procedures and training content.
- Support business growth by demonstrating a strong commitment to workforce safety and competency.
- Contribute to client retention through exceptional health, safety and training support
Knowledge & Experience
Essential
- NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent.
- Experience within construction & civil engineering.
- Strong understanding of UK health and safety legislation.
- Experience conducting audits, inspections and investigations.
- Ability to develop and deliver training to groups of varying experience levels.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
- NEBOSH Construction Certificate.
- IOSH Membership (TechIOSH or above).
- Train the Trainer qualification.
- Knowledge of ISO 45001.
- Experience using e-learning platforms and digital training tools.
- Mental Health First Aider qualification.
