The Role
We’re looking for a Junior Sous Chef to join our kitchen team at Hartley Farm.
This is a great opportunity for an experienced Chef de Partie or Junior Sous who wants to take the next step in their career, develop their leadership skills and work with fantastic seasonal and local produce.
Working alongside our Head Chef, you’ll be a senior member of the kitchen team, helping to deliver consistently great food, an organised service and a positive working environment.
It’s a hands-on role. You’ll be cooking and preparing food alongside the team, helping organise daily prep, supporting junior chefs and confidently leading the kitchen when required.
About Hartley Farm
Hartley Farm is a family-run, diversified farm just outside Bradford-on-Avon.
Our Farm Kitchen is at the heart of the business, serving homemade food that celebrates the seasons, produce from our own farm and some brilliant local suppliers.
Alongside our busy Farm Kitchen, we also have a Farm Shop, production kitchen and a growing calendar of private events and seasonal food experiences.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Supporting the Head Chef with the day-to-day running of the kitchen.
- Leading and supervising the kitchen team during prep and service.
- Taking responsibility for the kitchen in the Head Chef’s absence.
- Delivering consistently high standards of food and presentation.
- Helping plan and organise daily prep.
- Training and developing junior members of the team.
- Contributing ideas for seasonal dishes, specials and menu changes.
- Working with recipes, portion control and dish costings.
- Supporting ordering, deliveries, stock rotation and stock management.
- Helping reduce food waste and unnecessary overproduction.
- Maintaining excellent food safety, allergen, cleaning and hygiene standards.
- Communicating closely with our Front of House team to deliver a great customer experience.
- Supporting food production for our Farm Kitchen, Farm Shop and private events.
Who We’re Looking For
We’re looking for someone who:
- Has experience working in a busy professional kitchen.
- Is ready to take on more responsibility and develop as a kitchen leader.
- Is calm, organised and positive during busy services.
- Takes pride in producing consistently great food.
- Enjoys working with fresh, seasonal ingredients.
- Can communicate clearly and work well as part of a team.
- Understands the importance of food safety, allergens and kitchen standards.
- Has an interest in food GP, portion control, stock management and reducing waste.
- Wants to continue learning and developing their career.
Previous Junior Sous experience would be great, but we’d also love to hear from a strong Chef de Partie looking for their next step.
Hours
This is a full-time position working approximately 40-45 hours across five days, including at least one weekend day.
One of the big advantages of working at Hartley Farm is that our kitchen is predominantly daytime-based, although some flexibility is required for occasional evening events and functions.
