Job Summary
We are looking for a innovative Design Engineer to join our Engineering team, designing and developing industry-leading Fire Appliances for customers across the UK and worldwide. Reporting to the Engineering Manager and working closely with Project Leaders, you will be responsible for delivering innovative mechanical design solutions from concept through to manufacture, ensuring products meet customer requirements, industry standards, and legislative compliance.
Duties
- Design and develop class-leading Fire Appliances and associated mechanical systems for customers across the UK and international markets.
- Work closely with customers and internal sales teams to understand project requirements and develop innovative engineering solutions.
- Develop new product designs and re-engineer existing products for new applications and customer requirements.
- Produce detailed 2D and 3D CAD models, component drawings, and assembly drawings to support manufacturing.
- Design supporting systems and equipment, including instrumentation, lubrication systems, and test equipment where required.
- Interpret customer specifications, engineering standards, and statutory requirements to ensure designs are compliant, safe, and cost-effective.
- Create and maintain engineering documentation, including Bills of Materials (BOMs), engineering change documentation, proposals, installation manuals, and maintenance instructions.
- Produce high-quality rendered 3D models to support tender submissions and marketing activities.
- Support prototype development, testing activities, and design validation, including the creation of test procedures where required.
- Liaise with Production Engineering and Supply Chain teams to resolve manufacturing challenges and support efficient product delivery.
- Work collaboratively with engineers and colleagues across multiple disciplines to deliver projects on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
- Provide technical support throughout the product lifecycle and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Experience
- Degree, HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
- Previous experience in a mechanical design or product engineering role within an engineering or manufacturing environment.
- Proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD software, with the ability to create detailed component and assembly drawings.
- Strong understanding of engineering drawings, Bills of Materials (BOMs), engineering specifications, and engineering change control processes.
- Experience interpreting customer specifications, engineering standards, and relevant legislation.
- Knowledge of materials selection, manufacturing techniques, and product design and analysis methods.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and technical documentation tools.
- Excellent organisational, planning, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships with customers, suppliers, and colleagues across the business.
- Self-motivated, commercially aware, and able to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
- A willingness to mentor colleagues, share knowledge, and contribute to continuous improvement across the engineering function.
