Job Purpose
The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, repair and overhaul of pumping equipment used within dewatering operations. The role involves working both within the depot/workshop and at customer or project sites, ensuring equipment remains safe, reliable and operational.
The position requires a practical, hands-on engineer who can work independently and as part of a wider operations team, respond effectively to equipment breakdowns, and maintain a high standard of workmanship and customer service.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Diagnose faults, troubleshoot, maintain, repair and overhaul the pump fleet, including associated equipment, fittings and ancillary components.
- Carry out planned and reactive maintenance on pumps and associated dewatering equipment to minimise breakdowns, downtime and customer concerns.
- Undertake engineering work both within the depot/workshop and at external customer and project sites.
- Inspect equipment, identify mechanical and operational faults, and carry out appropriate repairs or component replacement.
- Work with electric submersible pumps, electrically driven pumps, 415V control panels and associated fleet equipment where appropriately trained and authorised.
- Support the maintenance, repair and upgrading of electrical components associated with the pump and ancillary fleet within the limits of competence and authorisation.
- Ensure all work is completed to the required quality and engineering standards.
- Use appropriate tools, test equipment and diagnostic equipment safely and effectively.
- Ensure tools and equipment are properly maintained and, where required, calibrated in accordance with manufacturer and internal requirements.
- Complete all required service records, job sheets, reports, timesheets, expenses and QHSE documentation accurately and on time.
- Follow all applicable Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental requirements, including site-specific procedures and safe systems of work.
- Correctly use, inspect and care for personal protective equipment and report requirements for replacement.
- Support the development and on-the-job training of junior engineers, new employees and apprentices where required.
- Maintain a professional approach when dealing with customers, suppliers, equipment manufacturers, colleagues and site personnel.
- Participate in relevant technical, safety and professional training.
- Maintain required personal documentation and certifications relevant to the role, including driving licence, passport and medical documentation where applicable.
- Be prepared to work reasonable overtime on an ad hoc basis to meet operational and customer requirements.
- Undertake other reasonable engineering and operational duties as directed by management.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- Recognised mechanical or electrical apprenticeship, or equivalent relevant engineering qualification.
- Minimum of two years' relevant experience working with similar equipment in a service, maintenance or engineering environment.
- Practical experience in mechanical fault finding, servicing and repair.
- Competent in the use of appropriate hand tools, power tools and diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to understand mechanical equipment and identify the causes of equipment failure.
- Ability to work independently, use initiative and manage tasks effectively while also working as part of a team.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with engineers, supervisors, management, suppliers, original equipment manufacturers and customers.
Desirable
- Previous experience within the dewatering, pumping, construction, utilities, quarrying or water-management sectors.
- Experience maintaining centrifugal, electric submersible and other dewatering pumps.
- Knowledge of diesel-driven and electrically driven pumping equipment.
- Experience working with 415V pump control panels and associated electrical equipment, subject to appropriate electrical competency and authorisation.
- Experience carrying out field-based servicing and breakdown response.
- Understanding of planned preventative maintenance programmes.
- Relevant site safety qualifications or certifications.

Working Conditions
The role will involve a combination of depot/workshop and field-based work. Travel to customer and project sites will be required, and some work may take place outdoors or in challenging site conditions associated with dewatering operations.
The position may also require occasional overtime and flexibility in working hours to support breakdowns, urgent repairs and operational requirements.
