QHSE Manager – Build Standards That Actually Work in the Real World
At Allerton Damp Proofing, we’re growing quickly.
We deliver damp, mould, ventilation, electrical and wider property improvement works across Yorkshire, working extensively within domestic and social housing environments.
As our operations continue to expand, so does the need for strong, practical and genuinely embedded Quality, Health, Safety & Environmental management.
We’re now looking for a QHSE Manager to take ownership of this area across the business.
This is not a role for someone who wants to manage compliance entirely from behind a desk.
We want someone who understands legislation and management systems, but who is equally comfortable putting their boots on, visiting sites, talking to technicians, challenging standards and understanding how work is actually being delivered.
Someone who can tell us when something isn’t good enough — but who is equally focused on helping us build a better way of doing it.
The EXCITING Stuff...
- Unlimited access to our on-site Allerton Gym, including Peloton equipment, free weights and functional training kit
- State-of-the-art breakout facilities with kitchen, games and relaxation space
- Monthly Value Award Ceremonies aligned to our company values
- Two-yearly all-expenses-paid Team Events
- Weekly car valeting and on-site hairdressing
- Monthly Break & Connect – lunch on us, plus time to reset
- Team events, socials, competitions and prize draws
- The opportunity to build and shape QHSE within a rapidly growing business
- Direct access to senior management and Directors
- The autonomy to improve systems, standards and ways of working
- A role where you’ll genuinely see the impact of the changes you make
The USUAL Stuff (Done Properly)
- £50,000 – £60,000 per year, depending on experience
- 32 days annual leave, inclusive of statutory holidays
- Additional paid leave during our Christmas closure
- Company pension scheme
- Free on-site parking
- Equipment and technology provided
- Training and professional development support
- Regular travel to operational sites across Yorkshire
- A growing business with real opportunity to develop the function further
WE ARE
People Powered. Purpose Led. Impact Driven.
Allerton was built by a family and grown by its people.
We believe good businesses are built on strong standards, clear expectations and people who care about doing things properly.
Our values aren’t corporate wallpaper.
They’re reflected in how we recruit, recognise, develop and manage our people every day.
We want our approach to QHSE to feel exactly the same.
We don’t want Health & Safety to become a department people avoid.
We don’t want Quality to only get discussed when something goes wrong.
And we don’t want Environmental responsibility to be something we only think about when a tender asks the question.
We want all three genuinely embedded into how Allerton operates.
THE ROLE
As our QHSE Manager, you’ll take ownership of the development, implementation and continual improvement of our Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental arrangements.
You’ll work across our field operations, office teams and senior leadership, helping us understand where our risks are, where standards need improving and what needs to change as the business grows.
You’ll combine strategic oversight with practical delivery.
That means one day you may be reviewing trends and reporting to senior management, while the next you’re carrying out a site inspection, investigating an incident or working directly with technicians to improve a Safe System of Work.
We need someone who can operate comfortably in both environments.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOINGHealth & Safety
You’ll lead our approach to Health & Safety across the business, including:
- Carrying out regular site inspections, audits and assurance visits
- Monitoring working practices across occupied and vacant properties
- Supporting technicians, supervisors and managers with practical H&S advice
- Identifying and addressing unsafe working practices
- Reviewing and developing risk assessments and method statements
- Maintaining Safe Systems of Work
- Reviewing and maintaining COSHH arrangements
- Supporting PPE standards and requirements
- Managing accident, incident and near-miss processes
- Leading or supporting investigations and root cause analysis
- Managing corrective and preventative actions
- Assessing and completing RIDDOR reporting where required
- Monitoring changes in Health & Safety legislation and guidance
- Supporting compliance with relevant CDM requirements
- Ensuring our documentation reflects what actually happens operationally
Most importantly, you’ll help us create an environment where everyone feels responsible for safety — not just the QHSE Manager.
Quality
Quality matters enormously to us.
You’ll help strengthen how we measure, manage and continuously improve the standards of work being delivered across the business.
This will include:
- Developing and maintaining quality standards
- Supporting operational quality audits
- Reviewing recurring workmanship issues, defects and callbacks
- Identifying trends and root causes
- Developing corrective and preventative actions
- Supporting consistent working practices across teams
- Helping improve inspection and assurance processes
- Working closely with operational teams to reduce avoidable rework
- Monitoring quality-related KPIs and trends
- Supporting client quality requirements
- Helping embed continuous improvement throughout our operations
We don’t want Quality to mean finding someone to blame after a problem.
We want to understand why it happened and how we stop it happening again.
Environmental
Our environmental ambitions are growing alongside the business.
You’ll help us continue developing our approach to:
- Environmental compliance
- Waste management
- Responsible disposal
- Pollution prevention
- Environmental risks associated with site operations
- Environmental procedures and working practices
- Supply chain considerations
- Carbon reduction initiatives
- Environmental reporting
- Supporting wider sustainability and social value commitments
We’re looking for someone who can help turn environmental commitments into practical operational behaviours.
Management Systems & Compliance
You’ll have responsibility for keeping our QHSE framework robust, proportionate and useful.
This will include:
- Developing and maintaining QHSE policies and procedures
- Reviewing and improving management systems
- Supporting ISO-aligned systems and standards
- Internal auditing
- Coordinating external audits and assessments
- Maintaining registers, records and compliance documentation
- Monitoring and closing audit actions
- Supporting accreditations and client assurance requirements
- Ensuring subcontractor and contractor compliance
- Supporting pre-qualification questionnaires and tender requirements
- Providing QHSE information to clients and external stakeholders
We want systems that help the business operate better — not systems that exist simply because someone once created a spreadsheet.
Training & Competence
Learning and development is a significant focus for Allerton.
You’ll work closely with our People and operational teams to support the development of QHSE competence across the workforce.
This may include:
- Delivering Health & Safety induction training
- Developing and delivering toolbox talks
- Supporting refresher and mandatory training
- Identifying training needs from site inspections and incidents
- Developing engaging internal learning materials
- Supporting competency frameworks
- Advising on role-specific QHSE training requirements
Training topics may include:
- Manual handling
- Working at height
- HAVS
- Noise
- Abrasive wheels
- COSHH
- PPE
- Electrical and gas awareness
- Fall protection
- Tools and equipment
- Site safety
- Environmental awareness
We want people to understand why safe working practices matter, not simply remember enough to pass a quiz.
DATA, REPORTING & CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT
You’ll help us move beyond measuring QHSE activity and start using information to understand performance.
You’ll:
- Develop meaningful QHSE reporting
- Monitor accidents, incidents and near misses
- Track audit and inspection outcomes
- Identify recurring trends
- Monitor corrective actions
- Support senior management with QHSE performance information
- Highlight areas requiring intervention
- Recommend practical improvements
- Help us understand whether changes we introduce are actually working
We want QHSE information that helps us make better decisions — not reporting for reporting’s sake.
YOU ARE
You believe good QHSE is about people, standards and better ways of working.
You’re confident enough to challenge someone when something isn’t right, regardless of their role.
But you also understand that walking onto site with a clipboard and telling everyone what they’re doing wrong isn’t how you build a strong safety culture.
You’ll ideally be:
- Practical and solutions-focused
- Confident and credible on site
- Approachable and able to build strong working relationships
- Comfortable challenging behaviours and decisions
- Clear and confident when communicating with senior leaders
- Able to influence without creating unnecessary conflict
- Curious about how work actually happens
- Highly organised
- Comfortable taking ownership
- Able to work independently
- Commercially aware
- Comfortable balancing risk, compliance and operational reality
- Someone who follows things through rather than simply raising actions
- Interested in improving systems rather than maintaining them because “that’s how it’s always been done”
You’ll need to be able to move comfortably between conversations with technicians, supervisors, office teams, clients and Directors.
YOU WILL NEED
- NEBOSH National General Certificate, NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction or equivalent – essential
- Significant practical experience within Health & Safety or QHSE
- Strong working knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation
- Experience within construction, property maintenance, social housing, facilities management or a similar field-based operational environment
- Experience carrying out site audits and inspections
- Experience developing and reviewing risk assessments and method statements
- Strong knowledge of COSHH and Safe Systems of Work
- Accident and incident investigation experience
- Confidence providing advice and challenge to operational managers
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Good IT and reporting capability
- Full UK driving licence
IT WOULD BE GREAT IF YOU ALSO HAVE
- NEBOSH Diploma or another Level 6 Health & Safety qualification
- TechIOSH, CertIOSH or CMIOSH status / progression
- IEMA or another environmental qualification
- Experience of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and/or ISO 45001
- Internal auditing experience or qualification
- Experience within social housing or responsive repairs
- CDM knowledge and experience
- Experience delivering internal training
- Experience managing subcontractor QHSE
- Exposure to client audits, accreditations or tender compliance
- Quality management experience
You don’t need to tick every desirable box.
We’re more interested in finding someone with the right foundations, judgement and mindset who can genuinely take ownership of the function.
WHAT WE DON'T NEED
We don’t need someone whose first response to every operational problem is:
“You can’t do that.”
Sometimes that absolutely is the answer.
But great QHSE professionals understand the work well enough to ask:
“What are we trying to achieve, what’s the risk and how can we do this properly?”
We also don’t want someone who measures success by how many forms they’ve created.
Documentation matters.
Compliance matters.
But ultimately our measure of success is whether our people are safer, our work is better, our environmental impact improves and the business learns when something goes wrong.
OUR VALUES (And We Actually Mean Them)
At Allerton, our values guide how we work every day:
- Straight Up – Honest, clear and respectful
- Live Wire – Curious, adaptable and proactive
- Got Your Back – We support each other and work as a team
- Top Drawer – High standards, quality workmanship and pride in what we do
- Call of Duty – We take ownership and see things through
- The Feels – We care about our people, our customers and the impact we have
QHSE naturally sits across every one of them.
Speaking up when something isn’t safe is Straight Up.
Looking for a better solution is Live Wire.
Making sure the person next to you goes home safely is Got Your Back.
Refusing to accept poor workmanship is Top Drawer.
Taking responsibility for fixing a problem is Call of Duty.
And remembering there are real people behind every statistic is The Feels.
Our monthly Value Awards recognise the people who bring these behaviours to life across the business.
WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS
Allerton is growing.
That means more people, more sites, more specialist trades, more clients and more complex operational requirements.
We want our standards to grow with us.
This role isn't being created because we want another layer of management.
We're creating it because we want someone with the expertise, authority and ownership to help us make sure Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental performance remains at the heart of how we operate as we scale.
You'll have the opportunity to build on what already exists, challenge where we can be better and shape how QHSE works at Allerton for the next stage of our growth.
If you're looking for a QHSE role where you'll be trusted to own the function, influence the business and genuinely see the impact of your work, we'd love to hear from you.
THE HIRING PROCESS
We keep our process straightforward and respectful of your time.
Applications will be reviewed based on qualifications, experience and — importantly — your approach to QHSE.
Suitable candidates will be invited for an initial conversation to discuss your experience, the role and how you believe a strong QHSE function should operate within a growing, field-based business.
