Full job description
Indies Structures is a chartered structural and civil engineering consultancy. Due to continued growth we are looking to recruit a structural engineer based in Birmingham to carry out work in the West Midlands on a self-employed, sub-consultant basis, covered by our professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
You would be working from your own home. Enquiries come into our office and are allocated out to you as a scheduled programme of work each month, so there is no lead chasing or fee negotiation at your end — you receive the instruction, carry out the site visit and produce the deliverable to our deadlines and templates.
The work is mainly inspections and reports on building defects, and the structural design of alterations and extensions, both domestic and commercial. Site attendance will be within a reasonable travelling distance of Birmingham. The arrangement would suit an engineer who wants to stay in the industry without commuting, or someone semi-retired looking for a consistent flow of local work.
We would expect you to be able to write good English, have a minimum of 3 years' relevant UK experience in building structures, and be comfortable with the Eurocodes and Building Regulations Part A. A working knowledge of AutoCAD is essential.
Equipment
You will need your own computer (access to softwares will be privided) and a car. For site work you should have a laser measure, a tape measure, a spirit level, and PPE including safety boots and a hard hat. An iPhone or tablet is used for site records and photographs — this can be provided if you don't already have one.
Chartered status is welcome but not essential. Technical support is available from our chartered engineers where a job warrants it.
