We are seeking an experienced, proactive Hotel Assistant Manager to join our hotel team in Carlisle.
This is a hands-on management position combining responsibility for our food and beverage department with supporting the General Manager across all areas of the hotel. Alongside leading the food and beverage team, you will provide practical support to reception and housekeeping whenever needed.
The successful candidate must have previous food and beverage experience and previous management experience within hospitality.
Key responsibilities
- Support the General Manager with the daily management and smooth operation of the hotel.
- Take overall responsibility for the food and beverage department, including the bar, restaurant, breakfast service, and events.
- Lead, supervise, and motivate the food and beverage team.
- Assist with recruitment, training, performance management, and staff development.
- Prepare staff rotas and ensure appropriate staffing levels.
- Manage stock, complete stocktakes, place orders, control wastage, and monitor departmental costs.
- Ensure compliance with food hygiene, licensing, health and safety, and company procedures.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness and presentation throughout food and beverage areas.
- Provide hands-on support to reception when required, including assisting with guest check-ins, check-outs, enquiries, and complaints.
- Assist the housekeeping department when needed, including supporting room inspections, coordinating room readiness, and helping maintain cleanliness standards.
- Work closely with reception, housekeeping, and other departments to ensure effective communication and smooth daily operations.
- Act as the manager on duty and oversee the hotel in the General Manager’s absence.
- Deal professionally with guest feedback, complaints, and operational issues.
- Maintain appropriate records, including cleaning schedules, temperature checks, food safety documentation, and staff training records.
- Identify opportunities to improve guest satisfaction, service standards, and food and beverage sales.
Essential requirements
- Previous management experience within hospitality.
- Previous experience in food and beverage, such as a hotel, restaurant, bar, or similar environment.
- Experience supervising and developing staff.
- Strong understanding of customer service, food hygiene, health and safety, and stock control.
- A flexible, hands-on approach, with a willingness to assist across food and beverage, reception, and housekeeping.
- Excellent communication, organisation, and problem-solving skills.
- Confidence managing guest complaints and making operational decisions.
- Availability to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and bank holidays
Desirable
- Previous hotel management experience.
- Experience managing a food and beverage department.
- Experience working in hotel reception or housekeeping.
- Food hygiene certification.
- A personal licence.
- Experience managing rotas, staffing costs, and departmental targets.
