About The Department of Treasury

About the position
To support the senior Australian Treasury representative in Europe (Minister-Counsellor (Economic)), by independently undertaking economic and financial reporting, policy engagement with UK and European counterparts, and assisting with visit and representational duties, while providing necessary administrative and office support. While based at the Australian High Commission in London, the role sometimes involves travel across Europe and within the UK.
Key responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:
- Independently monitor and stay abreast of economic, financial and fiscal developments in the UK and Europe, and maintain awareness of the political context.
- Produce high quality research and analysis on UK and European economic and policy developments and define and analyse complex problems within an economic framework, in a logical, succinct and persuasive manner.
- Respond to requests for information and analysis from Canberra, the High Commission and other stakeholders, applying sound judgement and working with limited supervision, and independently prepare briefings.
- Support the Minister-Counsellor to establish, maintain and manage relationships with senior UK and European officials and representatives of the financial and business community, and represent views of the Australian Treasury, including when the Minister-Counsellor is unavailable.
- Identify emerging opportunities and issues and contribute to the strategic goals of the Australian Treasury.
- Provide executive support for general administrative and finance functions of the Treasury Office including managing financial accountability processes, diary management, arranging meetings and travel.
- Manage Ministerial and other official visits including independently arranging, scheduling and managing programs, and assisting with logistical arrangements as required.
Qualifications/Experience
Essential
- Sound knowledge of economic and public policy frameworks.
- Understanding of Australian economic developments, institutions and policy settings.
- Understanding of international economic relationships.
- Proven research and analytical skills, with a capacity to identity key issues and report across a wide range of policy areas.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including an ability to build and maintain good relationships with a network of contacts and colleagues, and the ability to represent the Branch externally.
- Highly developed written and oral communication skills.
- Superior organisational and planning skills, and ability to work with minimal supervision to meet multiple objectives.
- Flexibility and willingness to undertaken varied tasks, including administrative responsibilities, and demonstrate initiative.
Desirable
- A degree in economics, law, commerce, accounting or public policy or equivalent experience.
- Experience in policy areas relevant to the Treasury portfolio.
- Understanding of UK/EU governmental and institutional arrangements.
- Proficiency with Microsoft applications.
- Experience with AI tools.

- Australian NV1 security clearance or ability to gain same. Therefore, applicants must hold citizenship of Australia, New Zealand, USA, UK or Canada to be considered.
