The Tuition and Medical Needs Education Team are seeking to appoint a Specialist Higher Level Teaching Assistant to join our team for 3 days per week (22 hours), starting 1 September 2026.
The main responsibilities of the role include providing a tuition, support and reintegration service, under the direction of a Specialist Teacher, for children who are unable to attend school due to medical needs, social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs or other confirmed circumstances. This will include planning and delivering high-quality tuition across a range of subjects, with a particular focus on Maths, English and Science up to at least GCSE level.
We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, patient and highly motivated, with a genuine passion for supporting children with social, emotional and mental health needs. The successful candidate will work alongside other tutors, so the ability to collaborate effectively as part of a team is essential, while also being confident working independently and using their own initiative.
A strong understanding of mental health needs and their impact on learning, engagement and behaviour is essential for this role. The successful candidate will need to recognise individual barriers to learning and plan appropriate activities and strategies that support emotional regulation, confidence, resilience and wellbeing. You will be expected to create a safe, nurturing and flexible learning environment that enables pupils to re-engage with education at a pace appropriate to their needs.
It is essential that you can communicate clearly and effectively with children in a calm, respectful and supportive manner. You will need to be able to engage children positively in learning, build trusting relationships and adapt your approach to meet individual needs.
Candidates must have the knowledge, confidence, and ability to teach Maths, English and Science to at least GCSE level, tailoring learning to meet individual pupil needs and barriers to education.
The successful candidate must be reliable, trustworthy, and committed to maintaining high professional standards, including working in line with the team’s policies and procedures relating to safeguarding and child protection.
Please see attached job description and employee specification which you should refer to when completing your application to demonstrate you meet the essential criteria for the role.
