About the Role
As a Technical Architect, you will be instrumental in translating high-level solution architectures into detailed technical designs and leading their implementation for critical public sector projects. You will define technical standards, champion cloud-native and open-source approaches, and provide expert guidance to development teams, ensuring solutions are robust, secure, and align with central government standards and strategic AI initiatives.
This pivotal role requires a strategic leader who thrive in fast paced environments with a deep understanding of Cloud native technologies (AWS, Google, Azure etc), SaaS products (Salesforce, Dynamics etc), GDS Service Standard, a proven track record in the public sector, and a passion for driving digital transformation to serve the public effectively.
Types of work you would be involved In:

You will design and implement citizen-facing digital services, ensuring compliance with GDS Service Standards while building in personalisation and proactive features to anticipate citizen needs. This involves leading multi-disciplinary teams through user research, service design, solution architecture and agile development to create intuitive and effective public services.

You will integrate AI into citizen-facing services, developing solutions that enhance interactions through intelligent automation, next best action, virtual assistants, and predictive support.
- : You will lead the strategic transformation of CRM and Contact Centre platforms (inc. Salesforce, MS Dynamics, Creatio), modernising systems to improve citizen relationship management and streamline communication channels. This involves implementing new technologies and processes to enhance agent effectiveness and citizen satisfaction.

You will develop and integrate comprehensive omnichannel strategies, ensuring a consistent and unified citizen experience across all touchpoints, including web, mobile applications, and other digital channels. This work focuses on creating cohesive digital journeys that are easy to navigate and highly accessible.

You will enable data-driven delivery to provide data-driven insights and forecasting and make use of tooling and AI to improve delivery efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Architectural Leadership: Lead the technical design of systems and services, justifying and communicating design decisions. Assure the quality of other services and systems, ensuring technical work aligns with the broader government strategy. Provide mentoring and leadership to other architects, exploring cross-government alignment benefits.
- Detailed Technical Design & Low-Level Architecture: Translate high-level solution architectures into comprehensive technical designs, including component diagrams, API specifications, data models, infrastructure designs, and deployment patterns. Document key architectural decisions and define transitional state architectures for iterative delivery.
- Cloud-Native & Open Source Implementation: Lead the technical implementation of solutions leveraging cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google), utilising services such as compute, databases, networking, storage, and security. Design application architectures using modern languages and frameworks, with a strong focus on Node.js and Java, and champion the effective use of open-source technologies.
- Technical Guidance & Assurance: Provide expert technical guidance and mentorship to development teams, helping to resolve complex technical challenges and ensuring adherence to architectural principles. Conduct technical reviews of code, infrastructure-as-code, and deployment pipelines to ensure quality, security, and alignment with design specifications.
- Government Standards & Security: Ensure all technical designs and implementations comply with central government digital service standards (e.g., GDS Service Standard) and security guidelines (e.g., NCSC Cloud Security Principles, Cyber Essentials). Design and implement granular security controls, including identity and access management, data encryption, and network segmentation within cloud environments.
- Technology Evaluation & Selection: Evaluate new and emerging technologies, tools, and frameworks, assessing their suitability and potential impact on central government projects. Make informed recommendations on specific technology choices, considering performance, cost, security, and maintainability.
- AI Enablement & Strategy: Undertake research, input into, and shape a long-term strategy for AI enablement. Work with stakeholders to shape a government digital strategy geared towards harnessing AI for the public good, translating complex technical concepts into straightforward language to influence strategic decision-makers.
Your Professional Experience
You will possess a deep technical background with extensive hands-on experience in designing and implementing complex enterprise-scale systems, particularly within the public sector or highly regulated environments. You will be passionate about long-term technological change, especially in AI enablement, and adept at translating complex technical concepts for diverse audiences.
Essential:
- Deep Technical Expertise: Proven track record in a hands-on technical architecture or lead development role, with significant experience in designing and implementing complex enterprise-scale systems.
- Cloud Platform Proficiency: Extensive experience with cloud native technologies (AWS, Google, and/or Azure) including deep knowledge of core services (compute, storage, networking, databases, security) and experience with cloud-native design patterns.
- Programming Languages: Expert-level proficiency in coding languages such as Node.js, Python and/or Java, with experience in building scalable, high-performance backend services and APIs.
- Open-Source: Demonstrable experience in selecting, integrating, and managing open-source software components within enterprise solutions.
- GenAI Coding Tools: A strong understanding of GenAI tooling for engineering and applying practical use cases (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude Code).
- Government Standards: Strong understanding of the government technology landscape (Service Standard and Technology Code of Practice) its unique constraints, and the importance of delivering accessible and secure public services.
- Architectural Principles: Solid understanding of architectural patterns (e.g., microservices, event-driven, serverless), design principles, and best practices for building resilient and scalable systems.
- DevOps & Automation: Experience with CI/CD tools (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps, AWS CodePipeline), infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, ARM templates), and containerisation (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
- Security by Design: Proven ability to embed security considerations into every stage of the technical design and development process, adhering to NCSC guidelines.
- Communication & Mentorship: Excellent technical communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly to development teams and non-technical stakeholders. Proven ability to mentor and lead technical teams and work collaboratively within the public sector.
- Strategic Thinking & AI: Excited about thinking long-term and helping deliver technology-related change, particularly within AI enablement and scaling AI. Able to use technical experience to guide architectural design decisions, evaluate proposals, and decide execution approaches characterised by risk and complexity.
Desirable:
- Experience with other programming languages.
- Knowledge of front-end frameworks and their integration with backend services.
- Experience with data streaming technologies.
- Familiarity with API Gateway management and service mesh technologies.
- Hold security clearance or are eligible to obtain security clearance.
