Lead Safety, Sustainability and Compliance in a Growing Manufacturing Environment
Are you an experienced Safety, Health & Environmental professional looking for an opportunity to make a real impact? Hartlepool Speciality Bags is seeking a proactive and knowledgeable SHE Manager to lead our safety, health and environmental strategy across our plastic packaging manufacturing site.
This is a key leadership role where you'll drive a positive safety culture, ensure environmental compliance, and support our sustainability goals while helping to create a safe and engaging workplace for all employees.
About the Role
As our SHE Manager, you will be responsible for developing, implementing and continuously improving our Safety, Health and Environmental Management Systems. You will work closely with operational teams, senior leadership, regulatory bodies and employees to ensure the highest standards of safety, environmental performance and legal compliance are maintained.
Key Responsibilities
Health & Safety
- Develop, implement and review health and safety policies, procedures and systems.
- Conduct risk assessments, audits and inspections to identify hazards and implement effective control measures.
- Lead accident, incident and near-miss investigations, ensuring robust corrective actions are completed.
- Provide expert advice and support to managers and employees on all SHE matters.
- Deliver and coordinate health and safety training programmes across the site.
- Drive behavioural safety initiatives and foster a strong safety-first culture.
Environmental Management
- Develop and maintain environmental management systems and associated compliance programmes.
- Ensure compliance with environmental legislation, permits and regulatory requirements.
- Identify opportunities to reduce waste, improve resource efficiency and support recycling initiatives.
- Monitor environmental performance and drive continuous improvement projects.
- Support and champion site sustainability initiatives and Green Team activities.
- Build positive relationships with regulators, local authorities and external stakeholders.
Permitting & Compliance
- Manage local authority permits and ensure ongoing compliance with permit conditions.
- Lead permit applications, renewals and communications with regulatory bodies.
- Integrate permitting requirements into site management systems and operational processes.
Training & Development
- Deliver engaging SHE training and awareness programmes.
- Stay up to date with changing legislation and industry best practice.
- Identify development opportunities and build SHE capability across the site.
What We're Looking For
Essential
- Proven experience in a Health, Safety and Environmental management role within a manufacturing, production or industrial environment.
- Strong knowledge of UK health, safety and environmental legislation.
- Experience conducting risk assessments, audits and incident investigations.
- Experience managing environmental compliance and regulatory requirements.
- Excellent communication, coaching and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to influence at all levels.
Desirable
- NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent Health & Safety qualification.
- IEMA, IOSH or other relevant professional membership.
- Experience within plastics, packaging, process manufacturing or a similar industrial sector.
- Experience managing environmental permits and regulatory inspections.
- ISO 14001 and/or ISO 45001 management systems experience.
