Highways Operative / Groundworker
About the Role
Oakstone Contracting are looking for an experienced Highways Operative / Groundworker to join our team, predominantly working across Suffolk on highways and infrastructure works (local roads) associated with the Sizewell C project.
The successful candidate will be based around the Ipswich area and should be comfortable travelling to different sites across Suffolk, with occasional requirements to support works in Cambridge.
This is a hands-on role suited to an experienced highways operative/groundworker who is confident working as part of a site team and has a good understanding of highway construction and reinstatement.
Key Responsibilities
- Carrying out general highways and civil engineering groundworks.
- Installation of kerbs, edgings and associated concrete works.
- Carrying out footway, carriageway and other highway construction works.
- Assisting with surfacing and reinstatement works.
- Excavation, preparation and backfilling of trenches and construction areas.
- Setting out and working to levels and specifications where required.
- Operating small plant and equipment where suitably trained and authorised.
- Working safely around existing underground services and within live highway environments.
- Maintaining a clean, safe and organised working area.
- Working effectively as part of a wider site team.
- Following site-specific RAMS, health and safety procedures and client requirements.
- Undertaking both day and night works when required by the programme.
Essential Requirements
- Previous experience working within highways/civil engineering.
- Demonstrable experience with kerbing and edging installation.
- Experience of highway surfacing and reinstatement works.
- Good understanding of general groundworks and highway construction.
- Ability to work safely and effectively as part of a team.
- Willingness and ability to work day or night shifts depending on the programme.
- Valid relevant qualifications/tickets for any plant or equipment operated.
- Good attitude towards health and safety and following site procedures.
- Sizewell C site induction to be completed before commencing works.
Desirable
- NRSWA qualifications.
- CSCS or relevant highways/civil engineering qualifications.
- Experience working on major infrastructure projects.
- Previous experience working on or around the Sizewell C project.
- Additional plant tickets.
- Experience working within traffic management and highway closures.
Travel & Transport
The role will primarily be based across Suffolk, with the successful candidate expected to travel to various worksites as required.
A shared company van will be provided for travelling to and from site. The van will be shared with an existing Oakstone operative who is also based in central Ipswich, allowing the successful candidate to coordinate travel and site attendance with the existing operative.
Occasional travel to Cambridge will also be required to support Oakstone's wider programme of highway works.
Working Pattern
The role will involve a mixture of daytime and night-time working, depending on client requirements, traffic management arrangements and the programme of works. Flexibility around working hours is therefore essential.

Pay: £160.00-£200.00 per day
