Surface Scan
Ramsgate, Kent, CT12 5HP
£27,000–£30,000 per year
Full-time | Permanent | On-site
Want to create content about things people don't normally get to see?
At Surface Scan, we work on some genuinely unusual projects.
One day we might be 3D scanning a jet engine. The next, we could be recreating an obsolete component that hasn't been manufactured for decades, scanning a vehicle, producing a prototype or helping an engineer solve a problem that can't be fixed with an off-the-shelf part.
Our clients have included Formula 1 teams, the NHS, Gatwick Airport and the Natural History Museum.
The problem?
Very little of what we do currently makes it online.
We're looking for a creative, confident Video & Social Media Content Creator to change that.
This is our first dedicated content role, so you'll have the freedom to help shape what Surface Scan looks and sounds like online.
You'll create content across YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and LinkedIn, taking projects from the initial idea through filming, presenting, editing and publishing.
You do not need to know anything about 3D scanning, 3D printing or CAD before you join us.
We can teach you that.
What we are looking for is someone who knows how to make good content and is genuinely curious about engineering, technology, manufacturing and how things work.
What you'll be doing
You'll have a varied role with plenty of creative freedom.
You'll:
- Find interesting stories and content opportunities around our workshop
- Plan and create videos for YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and LinkedIn
- Film using cameras and mobile phones
- Edit short-form and longer-form video
- Present regularly on camera
- Interview our engineers and customers
- Turn technical subjects into content that is interesting and easy to understand
- Create educational, entertaining and behind-the-scenes content
- Write captions, titles and supporting social content
- Manage comments and conversations across our social channels
- Track content performance and identify what is working
- Develop successful ideas into repeatable formats and series
- Help grow Surface Scan's audience across each platform
Most filming will take place at our Ramsgate workshop.
There will also be occasional opportunities to travel with our engineers and film interesting projects at customer sites.
This may include factories, vehicles, historic buildings, engineering facilities and other unusual locations.
Travel will be occasional rather than a regular part of the role.
You'll be comfortable on camera
This is an important part of the role.
You won't need to appear in every video, but you'll regularly introduce projects, explain what is happening and speak to members of our team.
Over time, you'll become one of the recognisable faces of Surface Scan.
You don't need formal presenting experience, but you should be natural, confident and comfortable talking to camera.
We're looking for someone who
- Enjoys creating video content
- Has strong video-editing skills
- Is confident filming with cameras and mobile phones
- Understands basic lighting, audio and composition
- Understands platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and LinkedIn
- Can recognise what makes people stop scrolling and keep watching
- Is comfortable experimenting with different formats and ideas
- Can work independently and take ownership of projects
- Is organised and proactive
- Is comfortable speaking to engineers, customers and colleagues
- Is genuinely curious about engineering, technology and how things work
- Is happy working on-site with us in Ramsgate
A full UK driving licence is also required as there may occasionally be opportunities to travel to customer sites.
You don't need to be an engineer
Previous knowledge of 3D printing, 3D scanning, CAD or engineering is not required.
We're looking for a content creator, not an engineer who happens to make videos.
However, you do need to find this type of work interesting.
If you see an unfamiliar machine or process and immediately want to know what it does, how it works and why someone needs it, you'll probably enjoy working here.
We'll teach you about our technology and services.
Useful experience
It would be helpful, but not essential, if you have experience with any of the following:
- Growing a social media account or YouTube channel
- Photography
- Motion graphics
- Thumbnail design
- Copywriting
- Filming in workshops, factories or industrial environments
What you'll get from usReal creative ownership
This is our first dedicated content position.
You'll have the opportunity to help shape our content rather than simply following an existing template.
We want someone who will bring ideas to us.
Interesting things to film
You'll have access to:
- Professional 3D scanning equipment
- Large-format 3D printers
- Industrial manufacturing equipment
- Prototype development
- Reverse engineering projects
- Unusual customer components
- Real engineering problems being solved
There should never be a shortage of things to talk about.
The equipment you need
We'll provide suitable cameras, lighting, microphones, editing software and subscriptions.
If there is equipment that would genuinely improve what we can create, we're open to investing in it.
An opportunity to grow
As our first dedicated content hire, there is plenty of scope to develop the role as our channels and audience grow.
You'll work closely with the Founder and Head of Marketing and have a visible impact on how Surface Scan develops online.
The reality of working here
Surface Scan is a growing small business.
This isn't a role where you'll spend weeks getting one video through several layers of approval.
We want to create, publish, learn and improve.
Some days you might film a project in the morning, edit a video in the afternoon and plan another piece of content with an engineer before you leave.
You'll need to be adaptable, organised and comfortable taking responsibility for your own work.
If you enjoy creating content, like understanding how things work and want access to subject matter that is very different from the usual social media role, we'd love to hear from you.
How to apply
Please apply with:
- Your current CV
- Links to any relevant videos, social channels, portfolio work or content you have created
This can include professional work, freelance projects or content you have created for your own channels.
Don't worry if you don't have a polished professional portfolio. We'd still like to see examples of what you can do.
Shortlisted candidates will be asked to send us a short video introducing themselves before the interview stage.
