THE ROLE
The HGV Class 2 Delivery Driver is responsible for delivering roofing, cladding and construction materials safely, professionally and efficiently to customers across the South East and surrounding areas.
The role plays a key part in maintaining Southern Sheeting's reputation for outstanding service by ensuring deliveries are completed accurately, on time and in accordance with all transport legislation, company procedures and health and safety requirements.
The HGV Class 2 Delivery Driver will be responsible for conducting daily vehicle checks, securing and transporting loads safely, completing delivery documentation and providing excellent customer service at every delivery point.
This role requires a strong focus on safety, professionalism and reliability, together with the ability to represent the business positively when interacting with customers, suppliers and members of the public.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Safe, Legal and Professional Driving
Operate company vehicles safely, legally and professionally at all times, following road traffic law, drivers’ hours rules, tachograph requirements, working time rules and company procedures.
Maintain high driving standards, avoid infringements and represent the business responsibly on the road and at customer sites.
Vehicle Checks, Load Safety and Health & Safety
Complete daily vehicle checks properly, report defects promptly and ensure the vehicle is safe and roadworthy before use.
Follow safe loading, load restraint, PPE, site safety and unloading procedures, reporting accidents, near misses or unsafe conditions without delay.
Customer Service and Company Representation
Provide a polite, helpful and professional service to customers on every delivery, representing Southern Sheeting positively through appearance, conduct and communication.
Communicate clearly with customers, transport and internal teams regarding delays, access issues, failed deliveries or customer concerns.
Route Awareness, Geography and Problem Solving
Follow planned delivery routes, using good geographical knowledge and awareness of suitable HGV routes, access restrictions and customer site requirements.
Respond sensibly to traffic delays, road closures, site issues or changing priorities, using initiative while keeping transport informed.
Systems, Paperwork and Training
Use internal driving apps, POD systems, paperwork and defect reporting processes accurately and on time.
Maintain required driver training and qualifications, including Driver CPC, and undertake crane, Moffett or other specialist equipment training where required by the business.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING
Essential Experience & Skills
· Full UK driving license with Category C entitlement.
· Valid Driver CPC qualification.
· Valid digital tachograph card.
· Experience driving HGV Class 2 vehicles in a commercial delivery environment.
· Good understanding of drivers’ hours, tachograph rules, working time requirements and road traffic law.
· Experience completing daily vehicle checks and reporting defects correctly.
· Good awareness of load safety, load restraint and safe unloading practices.
· Strong customer service skills and a professional approach when dealing with customers and colleagues.
· Good communication skills, including the ability to keep transport informed of delays, access issues, failed deliveries or safety concerns.
· Ability to use mobile devices, delivery apps, POD systems and basic transport technology accurately.
· Good geographical knowledge and the ability to follow planned routes safely and efficiently.
· Practical problem-solving skills and the ability to use initiative when dealing with delivery challenges.
Desirable Experience & Skills
· Experience delivering building materials, roofing, cladding, sheet materials, steel products or other long and awkward loads.
· Experience completing multi-drop deliveries to trade customers, construction sites, farms, domestic addresses or restricted access locations.
· Crane / HIAB qualification or previous lorry-loader experience.
· Moffett qualification or previous ride-on forklift experience.
· Forklift license or other relevant material handling qualification.
