Working alongside the Nursery Manager, the Deputy Nursery Manager will play a key role in the effective day-to-day leadership and running of the nursery. The successful candidate will help maintain high standards of care and practice, provide guidance to the staff team and contribute to the smooth administration and organisation of the setting.
You will help create an environment where children feel safe, valued and supported, with opportunities to learn and develop through engaging, play-based experiences. You will work closely with colleagues, families and external professionals to ensure children receive consistently high-quality care and education in line with nursery policies, the EYFS and relevant statutory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Nursery Manager with the daily leadership and organisation of the nursery.
- Take responsibility for the setting when the Nursery Manager is not present, making confident decisions and ensuring the nursery continues to operate effectively.
- Work collaboratively as part of the management team and contribute to the ongoing development of the nursery.
- Lead by example, taking initiative and providing direction, encouragement and motivation to members of the staff team.
- Help maintain consistently high standards of childcare, education, safeguarding and professional practice.
- Promote an inclusive and welcoming environment where equality, diversity and individual needs are respected.
- Support the implementation and monitoring of nursery policies, procedures and statutory requirements, including those relating to safeguarding, health and safety, Ofsted and special educational needs.
- Identify areas for improvement and work with the management team to maintain and develop high-quality practice.
- Build strong and positive relationships with parents and carers, ensuring communication is clear, professional and effective.
- Liaise appropriately with external professionals and agencies involved with children and their families.
- Conduct tours and show-rounds for prospective families, providing a warm and professional introduction to the nursery.
- Support the induction, development and ongoing supervision of staff.
- Coach and mentor team members, helping them to build confidence, improve practice and meet their responsibilities.
- Assist with administrative duties and other tasks required to support the effective running of the nursery.
- Contribute to planning, activities and daily routines that provide children with meaningful learning opportunities across all areas of their development.
What We Are Looking For
- A minimum Level 3 qualification in Early Years/Childcare.
- At least 3 years' experience working within childcare or the Early Years sector.
- Previous experience in a leadership or supervisory position within an Early Years setting, such as Deputy Manager, Assistant Manager, Third in Charge, Room Leader or a similar role.
- A strong understanding of safeguarding and child protection, with the confidence to support and guide colleagues.
- The ability to take responsibility, use initiative and make sound decisions in a busy nursery environment.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to motivate and encourage a diverse staff team.
- A genuine enthusiasm for working with young children and a commitment to child-led, play-based learning.
- A professional, positive and approachable manner when working with children, families and colleagues.
- A commitment to equality, inclusion and providing every child with the opportunity to thrive.
- The ability to remain flexible and adaptable while managing the changing demands of a busy Early Years environment.
